Not suprising considering the condition of that old air cleaner :eek

I fitted an EBC rear disc some 3 years ago, which I sinced changed as it was not transferring the heat well and lost the back brake a few times on the pyrennees and the corkscrew hill in Ireland it eventually over heated and dished. I fitted a brembo and never had a problem since. (Not even on the corkscrew) Unfortunately as far as I know Brembo do not do front discs.
I have heard good reviews about the Ferodo discs, but do not know of anyone who tried them.

Try draining the carburettors, could be water in there. It is very common especially on bikes used in all weather and ungaraged and can cause the problem you describe. If that solves the problem then change the fuel filter as it can hold water. Then remove the tank and drain it completely to get rid of any water in there.

13 Observations from 40 years of motorcycling
1.       Any rider can ride fast; the really good ones can stop fast.
2.       A flashing indicator just means the bulb is working
3.       Brakes only stop the wheels, it is how you apply that knowledge, is what stops the bike
4.       When following the leader do not assume he knows where he is going or what he is doing.
5.       Just because the rider in front did not brake for the approaching corner does not mean you don’t have to
6.       Just because the rider in front took the corner at a certain speed does not necessarily mean you can.
7.       Wait 3 seconds before taking off at a green traffic light.
8.       An insect inside you visor, especially a stinging one really ruins you concentration.
9.       When filtering, the exact second you break your concentration, the car in front will attempt to change lanes.
10.    When filtering up to red traffic lights watch for the “I’ll get out here brigade” especially on rainy days.
11.   If someone brakes on a straight road for no apparent reason, they may have seen the speed trap you didn’t.
12.   Just because the car driver looks you straight in the eye does not mean he saw you.
13.   Look at where you want to go and you will nearly always go there.

I am sure you can add a few more  :eek

FZS600 Fazer / Re: R1 Calipers

Apparently the R1 Gold Spot were the final incarnation of these type of calipers as the later ones use the same system, but are radial mounted.
The Pistons are similiar to Fazer 400 Brembos in that they have a black low friction coating. I replaced the seals on the 400 recently and whereas the caliper had some corrosion and the dust seals hard gone hard, the black coated pistons were completly corrosion free. I was able to scrape of the dirt build up off the pistons with ny finger nails. Something I could never do on the standard stainless pistons
My blue spots are in excellent condition, but I did notice that it was easier to push the pistons back on the Gold Spots than it was on my Blue Spots.
To answer the EBC disc question, I am very disappointed with them, :'( a waste of money, the OEMs were a far superior disc.
The only advantage they have over the OEM is that they are lighter.
I have always used EBC HH pads even with the OEM discs without any issues.
With the EBC discs when you park the bike wet over night the pads are rust seized in the morning. They are very poor when cold and worse when cold and wet. I have to apply the brake lightly to get them to heat up to work properly in cold and wet weather. I changed the pads thinking that there may have been contaminated from the running in process of the discs but the new ones were the same. They also make a strange whirring sound which took a while to get used to.
I would not recommend them to anybody who uses their bike in all weather.  will change them for something else,if necessary OEM when I ave some spare cash.

Replaced my front Blue Spots with a set of 2003 R1 Gold Spots yesterday. :)
First trip with them on today and strangely enough these give more feel than the Blue Spot did with the stainless brake lines. :eek
A direct replacement, only extra was 4 copper washers for the banjo bolts on the calipers. They even take the same brake pads. The longest part of the job was bleeding the brakes after fitting them.

The major difference I could see was the pistons and the only cosmetic difference is the colour.

I got them on ebay from Germany for £120 incl postage. I was looking for about a month, but they seem come up regularly enough. They are from the 2002/2003 R1. There were plenty of them available in the US at the time.

Replaced my front Blue Spots with a set of 2003 R1 Gold Spots.
Will post a picture when I get to take it out of the garage, started raining as I was finishing up and did not get a chance to take it for a spin. They look good on the Fazer
The pistons are black and look like a teflon coating just like the Fazer 400 Brembos. They are supposed to be the best of the bunch before they changed to radial ones

« on: 08 September 2013, 10:44:56 pm »
What changes have you made to the suspension and what weight are you (I know its a personal question)  :eek
Mine is standard Rear and forks have Hagon Progressive springs and 7.5w oil. I weigh just over 13stone which is around 85KG.
If yours is similiar I can give you the settings I used to get it to handle almost as good as my 600.  :)  Or if it like the one below I can give you thoses settings when I have it sorted
I will be setting up a Fazer 1000 next week which has ohlins rear and the forks have linear springs with 10w oil and the owner is around 95kg.

The battery with the best CCA for the Fazer 1000 is Yuasa but a little more expensive than Motobat

Are NRP still around :eek I got diaphrams for an XJ500 from Andy over 20 odd years ago. Great fellow to deal with :)

Would it not be cheaper to buy a replacement engine?

Looks cool though.
I have both the FZS600 and FZS1000, :) Definitely great all rounders, but could not really seperate one from the other as to which is very best.

What have you got to lose? :lol If it is broken you cannot break it, the worst you can do is fix it? :eek this has always been my theory.

Remove it and soak it in WD40, may be seized in the bushes.

Most likely the seat if the rest was replaced. They would have worn to suit the needles, which is why I always put back the needles into the seat they came from when stripping carburettors.
Suitable colour for parts of Africa
Why not go back to the original colours? From the picture the roling chassis looks in excelent condition.
Notice you have a Tuono, what is it like? I have a 2004 RSV R belonging to a friend in the garage at present, he wants me to set the suspension up for Irish road use. Very different to the set up required for motorway and primary routes.

Can you fit a clear tube to the drain hole and tape it up to the side and watch what is happening.
I have found that that the only way to solve something like this is to replace the complete valve assembly, Seat, Seal and Needle. Are they still available for this great machine :) ? Maybe not from suzuki but from either Mikuni or Kehin, not sure what type you have as both makes were used over the years.
Original Exhaust are hard to come by for these now. :(

since the petrol only has one route into to the carburettor, only two things can really cause this.
The Float and the Needle valve assembly.
Exam Questions?  :lol
Is the float floating?
Is the float sticking?
Is the float height set correctly?
Is the needle valve worn?
Is the needle valve seat worn?
Is the needle valve seat seal worn/perished?
Answer yes to any of the above and there is your problem  :eek

Whilst out riding, the front sprocket securing nut came off and damaged the splines and threads. Has this problem happened to anybody else and how did you solve it please? Also, where is the best source for replacements parts?
Thanks, Sue
