FZ6 / Fazer / Preferred tyres on the FZ6?
« on: 24 June 2020, 12:37:09 pm »
Been running Michilin Road 5's for last 1.5 years on my FZ6 S2, they're not bad, lasted well (over 10k). But never really had the confidence to really tip the bike into bends like I used to with my FZS600 on Metz M7RR's. A while ago, I did have confidence hit with a low side spin up when pulling out of a junction in a hurry when the Road 5s were still cold, so it could all just be in my head.

Anyways, the Road 5s nearly worn out now, contemplating going back to Metzeler M7RR or their new M9RR's. Figured they'd be a bit stickier than Road 5's, but still reasonable all rounders for all weathers, even if they likely won't last as long.

What do you have on your FZ6?
What do you prefer on it and why?Anyone tried the M7RR or M9RRs on the FZ6?

(can of worms opened, go!)

FZ6 / Fazer / FZ6 S2 correct chain/sprocket teeth pitch?
« on: 04 March 2020, 01:59:20 pm »
I'm pretty convinced my chain needs replacing, bit clattery when labouring (after adjusted to correct slack), got a couple of tight links that don't lay flat (even after plenty of cleaning and fresh lube) and I can feel a slight judder in time to chain rotation. It's done 22k and believe its the original.
Anyway looking a standard DID chain/sprocket kits I seem to see a mix of kits:
16/46 teeth, 530 chain (e.g. https://www.mandp.co.uk/products/yamaha-fz6-fazer-04-09-oe-did-chain-and-sprocket-kit-594874)
or
16/47 teeth, 520 chain (e.g.https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/YAMAHA-FZ-6-S2-Fazer-ABS-2009-09-DID-VX2-Gold-X-Ring-Chain-JT-Sprockets-16-47T)
Current chain just says "DID" "50V4" on the links.
What's the OEM spec? What spec should I replace with if I just want to keep it standard? I'm not after any increase in torque / economy or such like.

Thanks!

FZ6 / Fazer / Taming the FZ6 clutch - mt07 push lever?
« on: 21 August 2019, 11:08:32 pm »
Yeah clutch on the FZ6 is a bit naff. Got to release it a huge amount before it starts to bite, then just release a fraction more to fully drop it. It's stiff, it's on-off, easy to stall and tricky to smooth. And that's after a brand new cable...

Saw this hack:
https://www.reddit.com/r/fz6/comments/b6rqrv/i_recommend_this_mod_you_can_buy_a_new_mt07/?utm_source=amp&utm_medium=&utm_content=post_title

Swap the clutch push lever on top of clutch case cover for longer arm one off mt07. Part num: 1WS-16340-00

Anyone tried this?
Easy to swap? Or does clutch cover need to come off?

For Sale & Wanted / FZS600 clutch springs
« on: 10 August 2019, 06:48:48 pm »
Clearing out my bits box and found two sets of clutch springs. These are all used, but only briefly whilst I was trying to find a good combination of plates and springs that worked well without any slip or grab.

Set of 6 EBC heavy duty springs. Really heavy, will need a really strong left hand. I also found they caused terrible clutch grab when the engine is hot, unable to find neutral and bike creeping forward and needing a quick hand on kill switch.

Set of 6 genuine Yamaha springs, I bought new from Fowlers and used for about a month or two, much better, but I found they gave slight slight slip when pushing really hard.

In the end, I actually reverted to the original springs that came on the bike from new and were ancient by now, but which behaved much better!

Nonetheless, I don't want any money for them, happy to give to both sets to someone having clutch hassle who wants to experiment a bit. Pick up from Central London or Dagenham, East London. Otherwise, I can post them if you cover postage.

FZ6 / Fazer / Seat differences between FZ6 04-06 and S2 2007+
« on: 10 March 2019, 03:41:32 pm »
Currently looking at options to remould/rebuild my FZ6 S2 seat. Finding distance from pegs to seat a bit tight on knees and edges of seat dig in a little. Seen companies that'll take a stock seat, rebuild foam and recover. Would like to get a slightly taller seat, more of a lump to shove arse against and generally more comfy. But, in order to keep my bike on road I'd like to source a cheap seat for sending off.

I know the S2 had a slightly different 2-tone cover pattern. Any other differences? Is the actual base and fitting interchangeable?

For Sale & Wanted / FS: Yamaha Fazer FZS600 2003
« on: 09 December 2018, 02:46:21 pm »

Now SOLD.
Yamaha Fazer FZS600 2003, in deep metallic purplish blue - the coolest colour of Fazer!

Great all round bike, as commuting hack, small tourer or fun blast at weekends. Showing some age, but maintained to a very high standard with all the big service items sorted. It has had a couple of drops but only received cosmetic damage, the majority of which has been repaired to a high standard.

I’m second owner of bike, had it just over 6 years, used it as my daily commute, fun weekend bike, longer distance touring and two-up pillion riding. I’ve kept it in tip-top shape and well maintained throughout, on average putting 8-10k a year on it.

Done 62866 miles (note clocks had to be replaced due to fuel gauge failing, new set show 6k less i.e. 56866). Unlikely to change, as I’ve a new bike for commuting now.

600cc inline 4 giving 95 bhp. Averages 50mpg ish, with a 200-230 mile range before fuel light comes on!
Note the 2002-2003 FZS600’s have many advantages over older Fazers: large 21 litre tank, better mirrors (from FZS1000), better looking Fox-eye fairing, better headlights, preload adjustment on forks, better pillion pegs and grab handle and clocks with a clock!.

The good:
Genuine Yamaha double bubble screen
Rear hugger, and front fender extender fitted.
Genuine Yamaha crash bars.
Motad stainless steel downpipes fitted Oct 2013.
Scorpion Titanium exhaust.
Meta M357T alarm/immobiliser fitted. Replaced in July 2013, as internal battery of unit has ~10 year lifespan before it fails. Has worked faultlessly otherwise.
Hagan rear shock fitted Feb 2015
Fazer 1000 ‘blue spot’ rear brake caliper (stock caliper prone to seizing)
Hel braided brake lines front/back.
New Brembo rear disc and rear wheel bearings fitted Aug 2017.
Front wheel bearing replaced Sept 2017. Sprocket carrier bearing replaced Feb 2015.
DID chain sprockets fitted Sept 2017, front sprocket nut replaced as per recall.
Pair of Metzeler M7RR tyres fitted in Aug 2018 (only done ~1000 miles)
Stebal Nautilus air horn fitted, correctly with relay/fuse etc.
Re-upholstered seat, slightly raised, increased hump, more comfort. Original supplied too.
Just had 6k service (oil, filters, spark plugs, carbs balanced etc).
NGK spark plug caps fitted 2017.
K&N air filter - which suits well as runs bit rich from stock.
Coolant system serviced October 2018, O-Ring on thermostat replaced (had small drip leak).
Monokey Givi rack fitted.
Renthal bars fitted.
New clutch fitted Jun 2017, genuine Yamaha friction, steel plates, springs, etc (tried EBC plates briefly before, but were crap). New clutch cable and lever fitted too.
New Yusasa battery fitted in Oct 2015
Forks seals/oil replaced Mar 2015, with genuine seals & dust covers etc. Still good.
Front fairing replaced (with genuine Yamaha part) recently after an incident in 2017, so in spotless condition.
USB socket fitted on dash (auto cuts out when battery voltage drops when engine is off).
Got all paperwork, V5C, MOT history, log book, keys and Meta alarm codes etc.

The bad:
Bike has gone down a couple of times and although has been repaired to a high standard, still has a little cosmetic damage.
Small scuffs and knocks to tank.
Small dent in exhaust.
Some paint lost on engine, radiator and couple of spots on frame.
Cosmetic damage to throttle cable rubber cover.
Clock needed to be replaced as one accident damaged the fuel gauge. Replacement set show 6k miles less than genuine mileage. Original clocks included in sale.
Comes with both keys, but one is a little worn and temperamental.

It’s not perfect, but issues are all cosmetic. Overall a solid well maintained bike that’ll keep on going and delivering many smiles for many more miles.

Now SOLD.

Give me a shout if you'd like more pics.

FZ6 / Fazer / New FZ6 rider (but long time FZS600 rider)
« on: 21 October 2018, 07:38:14 pm »
Gone and picked a nice little FZ6. My small step up to beat the ULEZ whilst sticking with the Fazer's we all love.

Interesting change from the FZS600.

One question, air filter change schedule, supplied FZ6 manual suggests every 40000km - is that right?! Surely it needs some attention more often than that?

FZS600 Fazer / Ahh Coolant leak!
« on: 08 September 2018, 02:53:07 pm »
I appear to have small leak along seal on thermostat (bit below main coolant filler cap under tank).

Pretty certain it's the o-seal on this thermostat. Doesn't appears to originate from the hose or cap. (Cap was new a couple of years ago, as old wasn't holding pressure). On pressure testing the system, I get a a few small drips forming at the base of thermostat only. Anyone done this job of replacing and dismantling the thermostat? Any tips, tricks or advice?

Bit worried the attached hoses aren't going to like this job, as they're looking pretty old and flakey. And still we haven't sorted out any silicone hose group buys...  :eek
Anyone had any joy buying random silicone sections and bends to replace some of the hoses on the FZS600? For example:
http://www.jsperformance.co.uk/silicone-hoses/elbow-silicone-hoses/30-degree-elbow-silicone-hoses
Do we have any knowledge on what bends might cover what bits of the system?

FZ6 / Fazer / Non working right hand indicators and intermittent headlight
« on: 06 September 2018, 08:24:01 pm »
Just been looking at a naked 2008 FZ6 S2 up for sale near me. Got a couple of issues, one of which is electrics: right hand indicators don't work - front and back, including light on clocks, and when hazard switch is on. Left hand indicators are fine though. Headlight is apparently intermittently not working too. Sidelights fine, and dipped/main beam were fine when I checked bike out.

I'm figuring that since right indicators aren't working with either hazard lights switch on main turning switch, it's not likely to be the switchgear itself and def not bulbs. Since it affects front/back and on clocks, leads me to suspect something more in depth - loom, clocks, etc. No obvious wear on exposed loom though.

Any thoughts on what is likely to be culprit here? Any common electrical faults known on FZ6's?
What do you think? I'm currently getting cold feet and will probably walk away from it unless I can pin it to a common/simply cause.

FZS600 Fazer / Replacing HT Leads and Plug Caps/Boots
« on: 29 October 2017, 04:38:10 pm »
Got a bust cap and misfire on cylinder 4. So reckon it's time to replace. Any recommendations, tips, gotchyas with the Fazer? NGK leads/caps the way to go?

Did this job once before on an old ZZR600, with new NGK leads and caps, was pretty straight forward. Is the Fazer similar?

And are these the right caps?

Will the straight one fit (SD05F) or better to get a bent one like original (XD05F)?

Been about 25-30K since last swapped chain (and yes, front sprocket nut swapped then too). Not got too much slack in it, but it's developed a couple of stiff links and has a spot of surface corrosion. I keep cleaning and lubing it, but they keep sticking and I'm feeling a duff-duff-duff-duff as I got down road. Especially when I'm on the throttle, and seemingly changing frequency with change of speed. Since having this, I've changed rear wheel (disc bolts were seized!), new rear bearing and tyre - so can rule them out. Front end feels alright, nowt obvious wrong there, so fairly sure it's the chain. It does seem to ease off when I really lube the chain up.

So reckon it's probably time for new chain.  Got a DID VX on there now, debating whether to go same again or splurge a bit more on a Extreme ZVM-X (extra £40 ish) Worth it? Anyone tried one? Last much longer? Or just not worth it on a nice smooth inline four like the Fazer?

FZS600 Fazer / Screen bolt size?
« on: 18 August 2017, 10:18:45 am »
Anyone know off hand what size the standard screen bolts are?

Not in front of bike, and need to order some new ones. Have ordered some generic black nylon bolts in past, but can't find a record of what I ordered! Would rather stick with plastic bolts, as in a previous crash the bolts gave way saving the screen.

For Sale & Wanted / FZS600 / Thundercat rear wheel - free!
« on: 12 August 2017, 03:15:28 pm »
Got a FZS600 / Thundercat rear wheel free to good home. Good nick, no dents, just a little paint wear from security chain use. Only caveat is, it's got my old brake disc stuck to it with a bunch of rounded bolt heads. Two came out ok, but four rounded. One I tried to drill out, but gave up before I got too close to threads in wheel. If anyone wants to come a pick it up and thinks they can make use of it, you're more than welcome to.

Screwed up my poor Fazer again. Doing a track day over in Folembray, France and balls it all up on the last session pushing it too hard and ran out of skills. Video of action here:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BXhfPhAB1Bq/?hl=en&taken-by=beginnerbiker

Too wide on one bend, kissed the grass and threw me all out of shape for next chicane. Was on grass when I should have been doing me braking, chap overtook my inside and going spot fast, whole combination just messed me up, bottled it and decided to just run off. But was going too fast to keep it up right on grass. Doh! Bike went down, I just went sliding and came to rest sat on my ass - thankfully no injuries.

Straightened forks, bodged front back together with duct tape and cable ties and rode bike home (though Autoroute at 80-90mph was hard work with no fairing or screen!). Fairing shattered into loads of pieces. Fairing bracket super bent and about to snap now we pushed it back. Light cluster in one piece but lost many mounting lugs. Clocks took a bash, fuel gauge no longer works. Mirrors and screen intact. Small scuff to tank and can. Crash bars protected engine, and Renthal look straight still.

Now I've a dilemma as what to do next, do I:
  • Patch it up: combination of new fairing, bracket, possibly lights, clocks, plus whatever 2nd hand parts I can find. Reckon about £700-800.
  • Street fighter it, big single light on front, faff about trying to mount clocks to yoke etc. Prob about £200-300 odd plus time and faff (I don't have fabrication skills or tools).
  • Stick it on ebay and hope to get £400-500 spares and repairs, plus sell off choice bits separately. Then get another bike.
Bike is getting on a bit (2003 Foxeye), 52k on clock, definitely wasn't pristine and I need to replace it regardless by 2019 due to ULEZ in London (commute to centre daily). Bike has been serviced well, just put new rear disc and pads all round, Hagon shock, Hel lines etc. Even patched up with new parts I think I'd be lucky to get £1.5k for it. Insurance is due start of Sept, might be a good time to get new bike. Could scrape together a couple of grand and see what I can pick up (FZ6, Fazer8, FZ1, CBF600, CBF1000 or something along those lines)

What would you do?

Fazer Decals
Fazer Decals

5RT-28391-10 & 5RT-28391-10

Front left and right fairing decals for foxeye FZS600, with silver background. One has a tiny spot of creasing to backing paper - see photos.

These would normally set you back about £35-40 each. I'll take £45 posted (within UK).

FZS600 Fazer / New clutch woes - help!
« on: 23 April 2017, 06:21:58 pm »
Just swapped on some new EPC clutch plates and heavy duty springs; soaked plates for an hour, refitted all plates as original, judder spring on 2nd plate, pressure plate in the single position where it sits flush, torques all up as per Haynes book (8Nm spring bolts), put everything back together, fresh oil (Castrol Power1 bike oil, 10w40 semi), adjusted clutch cable at sprocket cover and lever, just a spot of free play at lever. But now I'm having a lot of trouble with the clutch action:

The clutch lever is really stiff, really hard to pull all the way in.
When I engage 1st, the bike starts to pull forward immediately before I've let any clutch out, I have to hold the front brake to keep it stationary.
When I pull the lever all the way back, I still can't get it into neutral again, I have to hit the kill switch.
I've been trying to adjust the cable cable/lever this way and that, but still can't improve matters.

Help! What have I done wrong?!

FZS600 Fazer / Clutch cable: genuine @£30 or knock off @£7?
« on: 11 April 2017, 07:18:26 pm »
Suspect my clutch cable if on the way out. Suddenly gained a lot of free play the other day - like totally flapping about. Tweaked it, clutch bite moved really far out. Tweaked it from the sprocket case cover too, better, but found it needing tweaking again yesterday. hmmm, doesn't bode well.

Last cable was a genuine one, went on June 2015. Shouldn't it last longer than that? I do a lot of town commuting, slow speed stuff, and am pretty lazy about sticking it in neutral whilst at red lights.

Anyways, worth splashing out on another genuine cable at £30 ish, or a cheap knock off from ebay at around £7 odd?
