Black and white check colouring shouldn't be a problem, but the blue light is just taking the piss.

I don't see an issue here, he hasn't enforced any law or tried to tell people what to do. He had hi viz on......loads of people wear it especially bikers. Years ago up here, a local lad dressed and rode a bike resembling a paramedic. He'd park up when one of the big shows was on over on the Wirral, after complaints from the public, the Police said he was doing nothing wrong as he'd not offered medical assistance to anyone.

Ref the bike, does this mean the Police force who sold it with livery should be culpable and what about re enactment groups?

we see old army jeeps but we don't assume they're full of old yank soldiers

I might be cynical but you have to question his motives. He had brought together a lot of things which together could be very misleading to most members of the public. Just saying

I think it says he added checkers himself so the bike from the police would have come without them. He would og got away with it if it wasn't for the blue light even though it was not lit.
I enquired about being a blood biker volunteer once and was told that I could use one of the livered up bikes but although it came with a blue light on a stick I would not be allowed to use it but was told it dos get you places faster.

My understanding is that the motive was to proceed more freely through rush-hour traffic by giving other road users the impression that it's a police bike and hoping that they give way.

Be careful because if you keep saying that, we will end up having to add another letter like this - LGBTW

oh- oh - quick - quick best do a bit of virtue signaling - I am not saying that the LGBT are "W"

When I had my Pan European, just wearing a high viz jacket made a big different even though the bike was slow red and I had a black helmet, people moved out of the way much better than whenever I didn't wear the high viz.
The muppets probably thought I was plod as I used to get people intentionally blocking my way without hi-viz but nobody tried that when I wore it.

Black and white checks are just that, the police don't own that colour coding.
That's old anyway, bikes round my way are white with blue and yellow paneling.

You mean like those chavvy twats who have blue-tinted bulbs or blue LEDs in their headlights to make people think they're the Police?

Why don't we see news stories about them?

When I had my Pan European, just wearing a high viz jacket made a big different even though the bike was slow red and I had a black helmet, people moved out of the way much better than whenever I didn't wear the high viz.

When I was doing my Direct Access, my instructor had a white Pan with yellow Hi Viz, white helmet and yellow Hi Viz jacket on.

One time we'd stopped at the side of the road to discuss something about the ride when a Police car came belting past, twos and blues going.

As it passed us, there was a quick Be-Beep from his horn, presumably because the driver thought my Instructor was a colleague  :D

Another time, there were some kids belting around an office car park on a Sunday in a go-kart and as we rode past, they suddenly looked very worried. When we came back a bit later, they'd packed up and left!

Not his fault if they can't tell the difference...

I am seeing more and more of them and as I understood only emergency services are allowed to have any blue light. Why aret they being pulled over - its not like they are difficult to spot. I have also seen green lights on the front - again only doctors are allowed them although I have never seen one

As I understand it looking like a police bike is not actually against the law.
You can even put the blue and yellow panels on your bike but they must not be reflective and a big no no is displaying a blue light and trust me, whatever you do, don't rig your side or spot lights to flash alternately.
What about those polite biker hi viz. I know a guy that wears one and rides a white pan with yellow reflective panels on the pampers and every time I see him I think it's the police.

The d*ckheads that wear those polite notice jackets are usually to be found at the front of a line of slow moving traffic riding at the speed of a snail.
I'm not against yellow reflective jackets any thing to help other drivers stop using us as target practice, but that wording has to my mind only one purpose to mislead other drivers into thinking it's a police bike and rider.

Absolutely correct and yet people don't get prosecuted for wearing them or selling them so why did the guy in this story ends up being fined for something that was far less suggestive.

Might it have been because he was a banker and had a poor attitude when spoken to by the police officer that stopped him. Surprising how a few words of friendly advice told to watch your speed changes to a ticket if you get gobby with the officer.

I suspect his attitude played a part but also the blue light on the bike wont have helped his cause.

Under construction regulations and use you are not allowed to use a Battenberg colour scheme. From what I can remember, colour of the Battenberg is not the issue hence the reason the AA have stopped using it on their vans now. You also cannot have blue lights on the vehicles. All the show vehicles you see in police markings, all have their blue lights covered up when being driven on the road.

Number plate lights you shouldn't be abel to see from the rear of the car as they are white normally. What you are probably seeing is the reflection which, believe it or not, is actually legal.

Going to work this morning I saw a car with a strip of very bright blue leds all the way along the front bumper and when the dickhead overtook me in a 30 zone I saw on his rear bumper two full length bumper strips of leds again, one strip was red and the other strip was green, but I was passing through that shithole Bradford at the time so its probably normal there.

There's a UK company that sell ex-forces vehicles (to the public), when they become redundant to the Service.
They have Ambulances still covered in all their stickers etc, a lot of Police vans (some still with the Cages in the back), Bikes, Catering vans, etc.

What do you do with those?

We are not talking about just a hi viz - I use one of them when riding- its the pretending to be the police that gets peoples goat.

I don't see how it could possibly help safety in any way because POLITE is written on back of the vest

If impersonating a Policeman is the only way to ensure safety then it's time to call it a day and pack-up riding.

Have you noticed how you never see the term 'Polite Notice' displayed anywhere else?.

It's not on any road signs telling you to slow down or keep you're distance.

A certain type of personality is in their element with things like this. You can just picture the smug grin as the bloke behind slams his anchors on unnecessarily.

I did a BikeSafe course at North Wales Police Headquarters four years ago. During the classroom session in the morning the subject of these 'Polite Notice', Hi-Viz vests was discussed. The person running the course, who had been an advanced Police driver and motorcyclist for many years, was of the opinion that wearing such a vest was very close to impersonating a Police Officer and should not be allowed.

If you have to brake because of someone pulling out in front of you, you don't want to get some idiot slamming into the rear of them, so if you can deter them from doing so in the first place, that's a positive in my book.

If impersonating a Policeman is the only way to ensure safety then it's time to call it a day and pack-up riding.

Yawn. The Police said, long ago, that it's not "Impersonating a Policeman".

OK they don't consider that sufficient to prosecute.

The twats that wear them sure want you to believe they are a copper from a distance though.

The people that wear these things are only interested in boosting their own self-importance.

In another era they'd be Chief Warden Hodges out of Dad's Army.

I don't see how it could possibly help safety in any way because POLITE is written on back of the vest

You've never had a motorist sitting six feet off your rear wheel??

But when they'd got within six feet they would have realised it reads 'POLITE' and that the rider was a 'PILLOCK'

Unfortunately, I've worked in the vehicle graphics industry in the past, doing lots for Police and Emergency Services vehicles. The main coverall for reflective colours etc sits under the Vehicle Lighting Regulations.

In there, there are the rules about reflective yellows, blues and lighting colours etc. They're very clear that only emergency service vehicles can use the designated schemes & colours for front and rear graphics and blue lights, but there is an option for an approved special "dispensation" that can be applied for and received in writing (for private ambulances, blood bikes etc).

Enforcing the Vehicle Lighting Regs seems very low on the Police priority list.

We had customers ordering Police style graphics packages in the mistaken belief that if they didn't have the word "Police" on the car, they weren't breaking the law. Under our ISO QA schemes, we had to record our actions when anyone asked us to design or supply schemes that were illegal - our normal response was to point out the illegality and confirm that we couldn't supply. This usually resulted in buyers telling us that we were being unhelpful and they went to the less "reputable" on line suppliers who would do anything for money.

I'd have always liked to have helped, but we supplied many of the UK's Police forces and Ambulance/Fire services etc - and to maintain our accreditation we had to be lillywhite about our quality systems and compliance, so we just couldn't do it.

Unfortunately, some of our competitors were less "honest" and lots of bikes/cars are now running around with "illegal" reflective graphics (imitating Emergency Services vehicles) - and I must say, I'm glad when the "imposters" get pulled.

We need to make sure people always pull over for Emergency vehicles and don't think "here's just another w*anker with fake lights etc" and fail to let the, through.

One day, an ambulance or a police car could save my (or family/friends) life, so I'm all for making sure they're never mistaken.

Hi Viz clothing though - I'm all for it 😀

I am more concerned with the idiot pulling out in front of me who did not see me, so fake Police on the BACK wont help that. And the fake ploice is more likely to antagonise the driver behind you, like you said he is only 6 feet from your rear wheel so he has already established that he is a nob

Which is what happened to me - although she was approaching in the opposite direction in her car (so she had plenty of time to see me coming along the road ahead of her), but then she makes a sudden right turn, across my side of the road, to get into a side road - she drove straight at me (like I was invisible)! I still have visions of the front end of her car almost on me, a fraction before impact (MY side of the road) -  then the next, a big smash and being laid on the floor with my bike on-top of me.

She did state right after the accident, she didn't see me! The concerning fact is there was nothing I could have done to avoid the impact - fortunately it was a residential location, so speeds were beneath 30mph.

I'd also like to state the justice system is A JOKE!!!! She was forced to do a 1 day driver awareness course - end of story. No points on her license, not charged with dangerous driving or indue care & attention (although the Police officer at the scene said she WOULD likely be - but wasnt). She doesn't even need to notify her insurance company she had to attend the course! She only has a fault claim on her insurance policy (as responsible). While MY bike (my mode of transport) gets written off plus have to deal with months of painful recovery.

I believe a car taking out a motorcycle should be more greatly punished, as the injuries the Biker sustains are usually much greater than a "bump" between 2 cars (with no injury to the occupants).

I'd be happy if they just treated us the same as all other road users.
