Just fitted like for like used brake discs
« on: 22 July 2013, 04:26:04 pm »
I have just fitted a pair of used discs on my bike, after fitting the right disc was touching the calliper and the left was perfectly central which was weird, in the end I had to space my right calliper inwards to fix the problem, the discs were fitted in the same way as they came off. Any ideas as to why this happened?

Your wheel isn't fitted correctly, or the caliper/fork is bent - asuming the discs are good.

Everything looks good without any signs of accident damage, the bike tracks straight and is stable at all speeds.

Are you sure the wheel is on the right way round. Check the direction arrow on the wheel

Yes the wheel is on the right way around, to be honest I have always had some brake drag but since I have fitted the washers the drag has gone.

I don't think this is disc warping, that tends to show itself as vibration through the brake lever.

Sounds like one of your discs has become 'dished' - this tends to happen when the pistons in one side of the brake caliper stick in the bore and fail to extend properly when the brake is applied. The extra push from the pistons on the working side force the pad against only one side of the disc causing it to dish inwards or outwards.

Check to see if your pads are wearing evenly - that's another tell-tale sign.

I had this happen on the VFR a few years back. It became so bad, the edge of the disc started to eat into the inside of the fork stanchion. Had to buy new discs.

EDIT: sorry, just noticed they were fitted to another bike so you will not be able to check pad wear.

take the 'funny' disc back off and put a square edge against it to see if it's dished or not. had a mate with a hond@ fireplace with just the same problem!

I had dished  disk and it was a right pain trying to figure out what was causing the pads to over heat and fade. I also went to add washers and it was then I noticed the disc looked wrong. When I removed the wheel and put a flat edge accross it, there was  a  serious dished effect. See pic

Hmm if its the same disc as in the image then you must have bolted it down in the opposite sequence to to counter act the dishing...??!!
