Gear shifter lever mod
« on: 13 November 2011, 05:55:55 pm »
Just want to check this lever is right before I proceed as the throw on the lever is different to the original

both levers compared

Lever in foreground is the (2010) R1 lever, background is the original fazer lever, when the R1 lever is fitted the linkage rod sits against the corner of the frame.

So does this look like everyone else's before any frame/rod modification?

That looks how mine was when I fitted it nearly a year ago. First thing, when you fit the bolt to clamp the splined shaft you will find some endfloat, so ensure it is as far along the spline as it will go. second, that foul point that you see is just on the corner of the frame where you see it (it doesn't foul all the way through) so with a Dremel, I just took a little off that corner (with one of those emery band things)to give it clearance. :)

Ok following on a couple more pics  :D

As you see on the 2nd pic above, the frame tube protrudes past the weld, you only need to take the tube back to the edge weld which means it doesn't affect the structure of the frame.

This only gives a slight clearance but it is enough.

As Dekker said put the pinch bolt into the lever and push the lever on the gear shaft as far as it will go and tighten the bolt up.

It didn't take long to do but I ran out of mini grinding stone so will tidy it up at a later date, Just need to test it out now  :D

I bent the rod very slightly. No dremel required!

Shortens the movement arc of the gear lever and I'm led to believe makes the shift more positive.

Yup, shorter lever throw makes for quicker, more positive gearchanges ... at least, that's what I found.  Worth doing. :)

Only one slight minus I found is that it's a bit harder on the top of the boot on upward changes, but I'm not changing it back!
