600 fazer Ignition switch sticking?
« on: 02 November 2011, 04:34:17 pm »
Any idea's on stopping the ignition switch sticking on my year 2000 Fazer? i've not used it for a couple of days and could not release the steering lock let alone start the bike?
i know its the original switch as all the keys match apart from the one i bent this morning trying to free the switch off  :\

the best option in the long run would be replace it, but any advice would be appreciated.

thanks in advance

WD40 down the barrel, and maybe get a new key cut cos your originals might be too worn.

i would get some spray grease and squirt some into the barrel,wd40 is not a true lubricant, spray grease should last a long time and cheap enough to buy

Dont oil the barrel as it is very ineffective. Dip your key in some engine oil (or similar) and then work the key in the lock as this gets the oil to where it needs to be and not just pooling in the bottom of the barrel.

All FZS have a funny tendency with barrel wear when they get older and worn you have to tip the key fowards as you turn it... maybe yours is starting to wear and snag.

This happened to me when I picked my bike up and stopped for petrol less than a mile away from the shop. Mine's like Deefer says, after pushing it down angle the key towards the front of the bike as you turn it, sounds abit odd but I do it without thinking now.

To bring this to the top as a reminder.....

This is a top tip. My ignition was sticking and I was on the verge of buying a new one when I I thought a last minute search would be worth a go. I'd tried WD40 and putting oil in the lock but it hadn't working. Putting oil on the key and working it into the lock has worked a treat  :)

also, without the strongarm tactic, lightly push the key forward towards the front as you turn. Not guaranteed to work all the time tho :s

You can buy some spray graphite grease specifically for this job
It's about 4 quid from maplin . Works a treat and stays protecting the barrel

I've suffered with exactly the same problem. A gentle push forwards whilst engaging the key and were in business. How much of a headache is it to fit a new barrel?

Make sure that the bars are able to wiggle as you turn the key or the lock-pin could be sticking in the yoke. Many people confuse the key lock being the issue with the lock-pin.

..and don't just oil the barrel, but also the steering lock mechanism where it goes into the frame. You might need the straw in your wd40 can to get to it.

My bike needs a jiggle of the key and the steering turning to take the load off the mechanism and then it works fine everytime.
