Does exhaust leakage matter?
« on: 14 April 2013, 03:16:55 pm »
After reassembling my micron exhaust, i noticed where the link pipe meets the headers there is a small amount of blowout.
Alot of people seem to try and get an airtight seal in these areas.
Does it make much difference to anything?   My bike will backfire a little bit off the throttle from highish revs, is this a possible factor or not?

Ideally it should be a good seal but i don't think it's a major.
My bike used to pop on deceleration, but it went away when i got the carbs balanced.

Had that problem with my fazer a few years ago, i just bought some heat resistant sealant smothered it on then joined together and left to cure for 2 days, problem solved.
Mine was really bad so had no choice.

Isn't the popping noise due to a bit of fuel vapour that isn't burnt off when chopping the throttle at high revs combusting in the exhaust? Can't see it being anything to do with a small exhaust leak...

Thats what i thought, but seen a few people online saying thats what was causing their problem.

i have a micron Exhaust and also have a small amount of leakage....
this is usually normal and is the condensation from when you first start up the bike.
ive never failed a MOT or had any problems with it....

ALSO, the popping noise is awesome, especially if you're going under a bridge or through a tunnel! :lol

This fella explains the 'popping' quite well:

My fazer 600 & zrx 1200 both pop and fart on the overrun.
Zrx is the loudest but sounds great, its all part of the aftermarket replacements.
If it bothers you get jetted.
