Removed the centre stand,cleaned/degreased/removed surface rust then applied 2 coats Hammerite smoothrite black from aerosol can. Also cleaned return spring and pivot bolts & nuts. Will refit tomorrow once paint has hardened a tad with nice clean grease. Preventive maintenance is the way to go. Also took opportunity to clean up frame, rear suspension pivot area- no rust on my baby! :lol
Noggy was glad you found & rode the mountain road to Macynlleth-I dont understand how these minor roads have such good surfaces but Im not complining. Also glad you managed to get that final ride in before you get overtaken by Atlantic lows moving in over Pembrokeshire!

Got round to check my tyre pressures... I know its a simple thing but important, I'd just been busy and the bike hadn't felt off... which is somewhat surprising given that they were 25F / 31R  :eek :eek :eek

Got them set back to a healthy 36F / 42R and it was definitely noticeable... can feel a lot more of the bumps on the road haha

This is on my list of jobs to do - as you say preventive more than anything, do you have any tips, what to look out for, wisdom on the job? is it best to totally remove rust back down to bare metal or is hammerite best on light non flaking surface rust. Do you first use a primer.
Also I have thought perhaps spraying ACF 50 inside the stand tubes somehow, so now yours is off is there any where that you can gain access so this can be done.
I don't do rain or threat there of. dry rider only with no shame.

Depends on the extentof corrosion,I guess. The really important section is the curved bridge piece that braces the 2 stand legs. Light surface rust can be removed but if its gone wafer thin or seriously perforated then prob best to get a new section welded in-thats assuming the legs are in good condition and can take a welded joint either side..Warning signs of a weakening stand are increasing difficulty rolling bike onto stand as the legs move out of alignment.
Dont neglect this symptom as the ultimate disaster is when the stand collapses & the bike goes down incurring further(expensive) damage to levers, bodywork etc etc.
While the bolts are out gives you a chance to clean up, also check condition of springs(one inside the other), finally reassembling with fresh grease . Best to fit both ends of spring & then offer up stand to frame-saves hassle trying to stretch spring over locating eyes.
Dont think you will be able to get ACF 50 inside unless you make a small hole. Good luck :lol

Thanks.
I think my stand is as good as yours- many people would not touch as they would say its fine, there is only a little surface rust on the joining bar, I did the side stand this year.
I wonder if a tiny hole the size of the thin spray tube would do any harm once re filled, but if there is no way to get it in there then there is no way it can rust from the inside in the first place is there ! which is what I would be trying to prevent.

I gave my 600 stand a good old sanding down of the surface and lathered on a couple coats of Hammerite direct to rust paint with a brush......it looks pretty ood actually.

Plus it is for sale :b

Swapped out the OEM Regulator/ Rectifier for a new one (well, from a breakers, but only done 9,000 miles) to see if that will fix the problem of the battery not charging.

Unfortunately, when I went out this evening, it was humid and wet and, once again, a few hours later, the bike would turn over but not fire so ended up having to bump it :(

Removed the rear wheel  ,  to drop off at the garage  tomorrow  to get the wheel bearings replaced . Whilst the wheel is off , decided to clean off 4 years of crud from the inside of the swing arm and chain guard .

Already did that last month as people kept telling me that was the problem (see my other threads on this)...
