Hi Everyone! New foccer...
« on: 17 January 2013, 08:21:14 pm »
Hi Everyone!
I'm doing my direct access course next week (in the bloody snow by the looks of it) and have bought a 2002 Fazer online.
Any advice on what to look for before handing over the hard earned £££? Any major warning signs to look out for? All seems pretty mint from the pictures, and I'm taking an experienced biker with me to collect (as I cant ride it yet - doh!)
Cheers all,
2WB

2 weels best.... taylor posted with good advice but remember that the bike will only do what u ask of it. dosnt matter if its 600 or thou. if u buy the 6 after a while u will want more..trust me on this. get a thou and u will have purchased a bike that will encompass all of ur needs and skills for a long time . perhaps all ur ridin life. and u wont have to go thru the process of selling ur 6 (and poss loosin £ash) to get a fazer 1. buy the bike that does it all to begin with, learn to respect the power and enjoy and love the bike for its life and yours.simples.

Hmmmm, I can see where youre coming from, but if a bike only did what you want it to do we would all be experts at wheelies and stoppies etc. Good riding comes with practice and experience. I think it makes more sense to build your way up to something more powerful and to get a feel for it rather than just jump straight on a 1 litre bike. We have all run wide on a bend cos we`ve over cooked it, an inexperienced rider on a thou overcooking it doesnt bear thinking about, they are just not used to that amount of power. Id rather my son learnt to ride gradually and lost a few quid along the way. Just my opinion. :)

I'd go for the 600 as a first bike. I ride an fz1 every day, and jumped on my sons fazer 600 yesterday to go to work. I had a smile on my face all the way as its a fun and very capable machine.
I'm the same with go for the smaller bike for a year or two, you won't regret it. And by all means go for the litre bike when you get more experience, and they're focing ace machines!

Good luck with your test, and welcome to the forum. Don't forget to post up a picy of your bike whichever you get. >:D

Thanks all,

I'm going for a gen 2 600, gonna commute 350 odd miles a week plus site visits so I need to keep an eye on the old jungle juice!

I think showing a sensible amount or respect for any bike is important, doesn't matter if you're on a chicken chaser or an R1 if you get run over by a cement mixer.

Was gonna pick it up tomorrow but it seems like there will be a foot of now between me and the machine....

Will post an update when she's mine!!!

you should check for the second gear problem. 1st to 2nd on the fazer can be a bit rough and that's fairly normal, with a bit of practice you get the feel for the gear change but it shouldn't hop out of gear. go 1st to 2nd and then accelerate hard in 2nd and see if it jumps out of gear. if it does that's a fairly big problem and you should walk away. other things to check would be if the rear caliper sticks, they have problems because brake dust builds up in them and causes them to seize. its not a major problem but its something to check. check the exhaust. if it's the original then check for rust as they do rot. depending on the mileage check if the valve clearances have been done. after that it's all the usual stuff to check

check condition of tyres ,chain and sprockets, also look at the service history if it has any and ask what was done at last service, check front fairing for  cracks or splits and any signs of an off on things like footrests, indicators, bar ends and exhaust, also worth mentioning exhaust downpipes stainless steel ones would be nice......dont forget to post a picture for all to see  :)

All depends on how much you want to carry. I carry up to 40 kilos of kit on my 600 atm. I've tried Ventura kit, bagster kit, oxford panniers, tail pack and magnetic tank bag. Best I've found is a bigtop box and small tank bag. If your flush go for bagster tank cover and small bag.

But whatever you carry, just enjoy the ride!  :D
