FREE FZS 600 '99 - Fire Damage
« on: 14 November 2012, 11:08:50 am »
This is very much a long shot and just in case anyone can see anything of worth. My bike had a bit of an incident with fire whilst in a garage and it didn't survive  :'(

I have no intention on claiming on the insurance since the excess is at least half of what they would pay out and I can't afford to add anything to that to replace it. So, if you want to pick the bike clean be my guest, I'm not charging anything but obviously if you want it posted then that's up to you to arrange. The bike is in Chelmsford so if anyone is local you are welcome to come round

Parts that are Unavailable
Downpipes
Exhaust End Can
Brake Callipers (Lawrence)
Front Sprocket (Lawrence)
Cam Cover Ends (Lawrence)
Right Crank Case Cover (bmseven)
Front wheel (Fuzzy)
Clutch Cover (Stedman8)
Generator Cover (Stedman8)

So if any foccer is mad enough, there might be something of use here?

Hi mate, what sort of condition are the brake (front and rear) calipers in?  Did the seals survive ok?  Also how old were the sprockets?

Any idea what caused it?  :(

Could always speak to Deefer about plastic welding the fairing back together!  :b

Did you narrow the fire down to the coke bath in the end?

I haven't really tried to get rid of it, just figured I'd give you guys a first crack it. You are more than welcome to come and take it away if you want :)

Calipers weren't too bad before - I'd scrubbed them up less than a month before this happened. Not too sure on the seals, I'll try and get the callipers off and take some photos for you. The sprockets are about a year old and covered about 3 - 4k miles.

As for the cause, nothing confirmed but leading suspicion is still the ultrasonic bath. I don't think the house insurance company are bothering to investigate or anything

Well the rear tyre certainly didn't, but the front managed to - not sure if the plastic well come off though...

Shit that's not good, claiming on your house insurance?
Any chance I could have the little engine cover on the right hand side only down the road in Tiptree

The house insurance won't cover the bike and the contents insurance rejected the claim for everything else which is ridiculous, not impressed.

I'll see about getting the engine cover off for you and get some pictures for you :)

No worries happy to come and remove it myself.
Why was the contents claim rejected?

Just thought, could I get those four things off the ends of the cam covers and the things bolted onto the ends of the radiator too please?  :)

Previous owner decided to paint mine (along with the caliper and fuel flap, including lock  :grumble ) with bright red gloss paint.

That's absolutely rotton. Feel for ya.

Did you find out what started the fire?

Some say that he eats habanero chilli peppers dipped in oil of capsaicin for extra bite and that his pyjamas are made from Nomex. All we know is, he's called Ad the Bad

Oh feck that must have been some blaze, I bet your landlord nearly had a heart attack when you told them.

Luckily the landlord has been pretty cool about it and said something along the lines of "well, I needed a new garage anyways" :P

What condition are the front brake discs in?

Sorry to see this Dead Eye  :( Hope it all works out in the end, will you replace it?

Discs may have survived since they can take the high temperatures but will definitely need a clean up. They were fine before the incident with no sign of pitting or warping etc

As for replacing it, I fully intend to as I loved my bike :( I'd have bought a replacement already if I had the money but that's where things have gotten very very tight for me and although I can afford to run it, I can't afford to replace it. My focus at the moment is to get my cage back up and running (gearbox swap on an MG ZS) then hopefully save up some money after christmas and potentially be able to afford one before summer? But even that's optimistic I expect... I miss it :(

Thanks for getting back to me - having thought about it properly though, I imagine getting the discs off the wheel would not be straight forward! Not sure about carrying the whole wheel on my bike even if you were willing to part with it...

At least you have a car to see you through winter, believe me you're not missing much thanks to the weather. Maybe another Fazer or something different? At least you have the fun of bike shopping to look forward to next year  :)
