Which tyres for lots of miles?
« on: 20 July 2012, 08:40:47 am »
Right, I'm due a rear tyre and am not sure what to get.  I do around 25k/year just commuting so I want something that's going to last a long time but not be stupidly expensive or hard as rock.  Any suggestions?

Ta very much  :)

I've always used the Bridgestone Battleax 020/021 & currently 023. I usually get around 10,000 miles out of a set. I don't know what that's like compared to other people's usage.

I have Maxxis Supermax, a decent tyre at an unbeatable price.  The rear has done 4.5k now and is still in good shape, I expect I'll get another 2k from it.

I got 3000 miles out of the rear Metz Z4 (was it) that came with my Gen1 thou.  Slow turning tyre, adequate grip but could slide when pushed hard in the dry, and had to back right off in the wet.

I then had a few sets of BT 021's, I was getting 4000 from the rear, double for the front.  Good grip wet and dry, quite lively tyre, drops into corners.

Now running PR2's got 6000 miles from the rear, should get double that from the front.  Great grip, good mileage, lovely neutral handing.

I agree with the geezer above.

Am currently also on PR2s, already 4000 miles odd commuting and still not squareing off appreciably. My last set of PR2s gave me 11,000 commuting miles on the rear, squared off visibly at 8,000 but still sorta ok until I changed them.
Pay around £230-250 a pair, fitted.

Continental Road Attack 2

had them on before and got ~9000 miles from the back (i dont ride hard)

cost about £220 for the pair fitted to the bike.

I've got the Bridgestone 023s as well, 9000 miles and the rear's just starting to square off a bit.

I got around 7000 from my RA2s, they are my fave tyre for the Fazer and I'll be going back to them once my PRs are shot. Reccomended.

If you've searched for maxxis on here, you'll see that Raymy has had issues with maxxis but in their defence, they are cheap and got around 8 or 10k (maybe more, can't remember) from the rear, double that for the frontso for doing that amount of miles in a year on the motorway they are pretty unbeatable.

I've so far had 6k out of my PR3s & I reckon they're looking good for making 10k which considering how well they grip (particularly in the wet) I find amazing, with Avon Storms on my old 1200 Bandirt or the PR2s that were new on the FZS100 when I bought it, I'd normally be replacing the back by now.

Which tyre for lots of miles or which riding style/type of riding?

I've only had BT021s on the Fazer8, and have got 22,500 out of 2 front tyres, 17,800 out of 2 rears so that makes 4,700 on the current rear. So I guess its 1/2 worn out. I dont commute/do much around town stop/start riding.
