Fazer 600 sounding like exhaust blowing but it isn't
« on: 20 May 2022, 12:41:43 pm »
Hi Folks.

New to the group so hope i posted this in the correct place.

I have a Fazer 600 Year 2000. Just had the downpipes changed because the noise the engine was making sounded like the exhaust blowing. 1 of the studs had broke so when the engine warmed up i thought that was expanding and causing the blowing noise.

Changed oil and filters also.

Did a trip to work and back yesterday (Aprox. 15 mile round trip) and when i got it home it sounded like exhaust blowing again. The noise gets worse the longer the engine been running.

Any idea's of what to look at next would be greatfully recieved.

Thanks in advance

have you tried to locate where the "blowing" sound is coming from?
Did you get the stud changed? If not, that's the prime candidate.
Hole in the area that the pipes join together?
Problem with the joint between the downpipes and the tail pipe?
Just normal noise from the end can?

All the studs were changed when new downpipes fitted.
No air coming from around any of the joints and normal noise from end can (Standard can).
Sound like the noise is coming from the engine rather than the exhaust.
Just spoke to a friend of mine (Wish i'd spoke to him before posting lol) and he said because i put E10 in it and then left it stood it could be water in the fuel system that causing noise when engine warms up.It's a stab in the dark but i'm going to drain fuel system this weekend and get some superplus and give it a go.
Thanks for your reply BBROWN1664

just out of interest, what do you have your idle speed set to? too low and it can sound odd. Should be 1150-1250rpm

Idle speed just over 1000rpm.
Noise gets worse as revs get higher. It sounds like a tank but only when it gets warmer.
After i've had a go at the fuel this weekend (Weather permitting) i'll let you know if it makes a difference or not.
Any other ideas that come my way will be greatfully recieved as it's doing my head in. (And my wallet lol)

Good thinking about the video.
I'll post it over the weekend as working later.
Thanks

If it's not blowing from the header.  What exhaust is fitted standard OE or replacement?

Just to check, get a rag or put on a thick glove and block the end of the exhaust pipe.

This should muffle the exhaust noise enough so you can hear if any gas is escaping, also, if the engine doesn't stop, there's definitely a leak somewhere.

Years ago a mechanic had my carbs off and on refitting he accidentally folded one of the rubbers in on itself causing an air leak. And as it was #3 carb it wasn't easy to spot either so was only found after he removed them again.
It was enough of a leak to cause bogging down on acceleration though, so was quite noticeable for me as soon as I rode it home. It's another area that could be checked though, if it sounds like it's from the engine.

I took the silencer off today just to check the joint between that and the downpipes and found a tiny hole under the clamp in the silencer pipe.
Tomorrow there will be an addition of a Guinness can and some exhaust paste lol.
Thanks for all that replied with info and ideas. It helped

Cheers :)

You sure that's not a drainage hole, and meant to be there?

Definitely not meant to be there.
Rust hole and it's on the top of the pipe not the bottom.

At a guess I would say the above cancels out the the E10 idea

Have you torqued up the header bolts recently?
When the pipes are removed then put back on they need a bit of settling in due to vibration, especially when new crush gaskets have been used.

I take it you actually removed the old gaskets before you fitted the new ones?

Was actually gonna suggest that as well.
When I bought my bike my headers were blowing a bit and I found two sets in there when I went to replace the gaskets.
