Heavy Throttle & no pull low down - 2005 FZS1000
« on: 31 May 2019, 07:21:34 pm »
Ok So I haven't been riding the FZS for a long while, first winter and then ULEZ and Jumped on the bike today and found some niggles -
  • I have been riding a GSF1200 and now 1250 all this time and the FZS feels gutless below 2500rpm compared to the bandits. When I go to pull away half the time Im bogging the bike down untill I slip the clutch and once I get above 2000-2500 all is as expected and  bike pulls like a turbine.
  • The throttle action feels very heavy and again it might be the bandit versus the FZS again, but I don't remember the FZS throttle always being that heavy.
So my plan off attack over the weekend weather permitting is -
  • check exup vale is moving freely and smoothly and check the action of the exup cables and servo - for the bogging down issue (if the valve isnt returning back to closed at low rpm - would this even be the causing of the bogging down or is it all down to the Bandits just having more torque pull at very low rpm?
  • disconnect the throttle cables and check the throttle twist body moves freely, check the inner cables move freely .
What else should I be looking for or checking, suggestions welcome.

I dont think its anything drastic mate. a sticky cable probably; its suprising the difference that makes. One time I routed the throttle cable slightly wrong after swapping the carbs out and my throttle was stiff, another time it was when I adjusted the cables too tight. as for jumping off the bandito onto the thou...its exactly the same for me when ive been riding the cb1300 then use the fazer..it feels like a 600 low down. The thou is a fantastic bike, but it aint got the grunt of the bigger cubed bikes. you'll get it sorted bud... ;)

Ignition advancer would help assuming you don't already have one fitted.

I always found the 1000 was a bit soft until 3500 revs. A non working EXUP makes it feel worse although some do not think so.First port of call is check the EXUP is set correctly.Synchronise the carburettors set the idle and then set the TPS.
If it still feels soft then change the throttle tube to R6 type the models from 2006 onward,  Easy cheap fix.
I always felt the 1000 had a very lazy throttle compared to other large capacity bikes I have ridden and the R6 tube sorted it, much more enjoyable to ride now

I did buy one ages ago and never fitted it so sold it, might go and get another one if it will help the pull below 3k.

  • set correctly.Synchronise the carburettors set the idle and then set the TPS.

  • Cant remember when I had the carbs synced last and have the kit to do this, will have to find the link about setting the TPS (but from what I remember you should never need to touch the position of the TPS?)
  • Oh yer, I vaguely remember this so did a search and found unfazed'd thread, but no pics or bullet points :-(

On the heavy throttle issue, lubing the cables made no difference and they were already quite free - only the push cable had a worn-in kink so I got a set on slinky cables and a clutch cable from wemoto as it cant hurt.
