The title says it ... I want to put the  maximum I can to make this very rapid bike a bit less of a screamer and less gear changing , I have a Kliktronic gear shifter as I am disabled  but even so minimising changes is good ...   I have a 17 waiting ti be fitted here but wonder if i can go higher without getting a longer chaib ... cheers  folks

Thanks for the link ... I hope my 17t will fit despite the warning there that the chain needs extending - the chain is about half worn ... if not I will get a 16t and leave it at that until the current chain is needing changed .. I imagine when the chain  needs replaced I can simply count links and add another couple and order a chain that long with the apropriate sprockets ...  Looking at a video of the space around the sprocket I think an 18 would be too close to the clutch rod ...

You are limited by the space between the chain and the clutch pushrod,  I know a 16 tooth fits, but would have doubts as to a 17tooth one fitting safely as it would be extremley close to the pushrod with the chain on. The bigest available rear is 49, but you could probably have a 51 tooth made.16/51 would be almost the same as 17/48 ratio wise. Smallest available rear from JT spockets (I use these mostly) is 38 but it would probably be too small and raise the gearing to much. A 16/45 would be almost the same as 17/48 ratio wise but JT sprockets do not do 45 only 44 or 46. A16/44 would be as low as I would go. Any smaller would be like trying to take off in 2nd gear and would not do the clutch any good. I would not be inclined to recommend the 17 as it could interfere with the clutch operation and that is something you do not want.

Klilktronic is a nice bit of kit, good to see you are still able to ride

Hi , Unfazed , yeah it looks close alright ---  I will have a look and make very sure it misses if i use the 17t. I may be muddlesd  but I think I would need to go  down in teeth on the rear sprocket to increase the gear ratio? The Kliktronic is ace , makes a huge difference , I have only limited gear changes in my leg/foot so it means i can ride  longer and change when i want to , not chug around ... Not so well today but hopefully tomorrow I can take a peep at the sprocket clearence .

Yes, my apologies, you are correct I put down the down the wrong size should have been 16/45, going up three at the rear is equivalent to dropping one at the front.
I was replying to a trail bike forum query in relation to the Serow at the same time. :( Note to self answer one query at the time  :rolleyes
I will change the original to read correctly.
It is motorcycling which keeps our heads clear, but difficult to explain to those who have never ridden a bike.
Post how you get on with the 17 tooth, as it may help others

Did you fit the Kliktronic kit yourself?

Hi , yup fitted the kliktronic ... simply threaded two holes and attached a bracket to the front sprocket cover and it works ... a bit heath robinson to look at but it functions well .... The 17 is fairly close  but not so bad when looking straight on . It fits with the origional chain with slack to spare , i now wonder if an 18 would fit . the chain looks like it will accomodate and although it would be even closer to the clutch rod it would still miss by a couple of mm which is enough ... looks safe enough to me  , not a hint of any fouling with the 17 anyway .... havent tried it yet . Knackered from all the messing about . Also raised the bars and put braided hoses on the front today ... so a success ful afternoons  messing about ... In summary 17t seems cool , I think 18 would also work but that would be as tight as i would wish to go ... any more and as you say the gearing would be too compromised as well as a potential for damage of the clutch rod ...

Thanks for the link , I wish I had been more patient- I went and bought the same on flea bay for 3 times that price ...
Had a short blatt and turns out the 17tooth runs like a beut but still want to try the 18 ... much more chilled ride with nutter on tap at the higher revs .. best of both
