best place for new lockset?
« on: 09 April 2019, 10:03:17 pm »
my ignition is getting worse...really have to fiddle with the key sometimes to turn ignition on.  Just seen on "delboys garage" (cheers dynspud) he got a new ignition barrel and fuel tank fillercap for 48 quid from wemoto, but it dont look like they do em for fazers. Any ideas fellers?

thanks for the replies guys. I havnt tried a new key mate, as I have two, and they both work faultlessly on the fuel cap filler and seat lock, so am assuming the wear is in the ignition barrel not the key. I was trained as a locksmith when I ran a centre teaching building etc, so I got a reasonable idea of how pin tumbler locks work, and I know the shear line isnt lining up. Im actually useing a locksmithing technique to make it useable lol, so gotta get it sorted.
Have tried all manner of wet and dry lubes including graphite too bud, they worked a year or so ago but are becoming less effective now its got 40k plus up. Think its just a weakness in these barrels, hence I dont want to buy a second hander that may go the same way pretty quickly. Having said that if anyone has a decent one for sale that doesn't look like its been around the clock too many times i'd be interested. :lol :lol

have you tried cleaning it out with brake cleaner. Had same problem took barrel off turned it upside down sprayed brake cleaner in the barrel worked fine after that. The pins stick with the crud that gets into the lock barrel. Hope that helps

Just an idea, have you lifted the tank and looked at the connectors to the ignition, mine a 2001 fazer 1000, has two connectors, the one with two wire burnt out over time, I thought is was the ignition barrel, but just cutting the connector out and replacing, solved the problem.

Don.

cheers don but the problem is difficulty in turning it from off to on, not the actual electrical connection mate.

Ok, just thought i’d mention it.

Good luck with finding a new lock, the yam ones are so expensive, I did think of getting WeMoto fazer 600 one and joining wires together.
