I also had this one. Its almost like a trick question. How many bikes are actually 50cc -Any? I thought they were 49cc - ergo my answer 125cc

50cc is the *minimum*, so mopeds being 49cc aren't legal.

You can use a C90 on the motorway, but you're taking your life in your hands if you do!!

I once rode briefly on a section of M6 north of Birmingham on a 1960s 125cc scooter-talk about taking your life in your hands! :eek The trucks were constantly overtaking and causing amazing turbulence effects-never again! My Honda Cub (110cc Lifan 4 speed manual) is very happy on Englands byways and A roads where theres a 50/60mph limit

Whilst on the subject of cc why only 49 and not 50. Same with the FZS 600 which is only 599cc isnt it ?

I have a faint memory of reading about that years ago and I believe it was something to do with tax.

For mopeds, the limit has always been "49cc or under" as someone somewhere believed that once you hit the magic 50cc capacity it became a motorbike.

As for the others (400, 600, 750 etc) I thought that was just manufacturers trying to create their own classes that then got integrated into the VED scheme in the UK. I am guessing it has its roots in Japan with their taxation rules though.

Yes that was it, the article did refer to Japanese taxations.

No point really because the governments just move the goal posts like they have done with low emission cars were £30 now £130 cause everyone was buying them and the Gov lost revenue
