Disc bedding procedure
« on: 19 April 2018, 07:24:40 pm »
For this of you who have bought new discs or had a brand new motorbike..... what is the typical bedding in process??
I've never had either before and as such was just planning on riding as normal for a few weeks before being heavy on the brakes, but reading online there seems to be various different methods ranging from jamming them on at speed, slowly braking from increasing speeds and riding for X amount of yard with the brakes slightly on?
Anyone have any advice on a good way to bed them in correctly?

As long as the bed is disc shaped and you both really like each other - just relax and let the nature take it's course.

On the more serious note - discs won't bed from time, but from braking. Find a safe piece of pavement and get it over with. Best thing IMO is to start slow - dragging the brakes gently, at low speed to heat them up (but not overheat them). About 3-5 seconds of dragging, then cooling off for about 10-15 seconds. Make several rounds.

Then make a few moderately strong stops from about 50 km/h speed.

After that, make a few hard stops (again, safer at moderate speeds, at least for the first two).

No need to make a full (complete stop), perhaps even better not to.

Ride a bit to let them cool of and you're good. Proceed as usual. That should do it.

Most things done in a hurry need to be done again - patiently.

With a new bike there's new tyres to scrub in as well, so you're forced to take it easy for the first 100 or so miles.
Had a look on the EBC site. They recommend with new pads and discs to do 200-300 miles of gentle undramatic braking, taking into consideration that they won't be as sharp as you'd expect. Then, especially with organic pads, which are softer, execute a hard 60mph to 20 mph stop, repeated 10 times to generate plenty of heat. You should then be good to go. As you've said there's plenty of advice out there. I don't know how to put up links but a google of EBC's site also gives info on bedding in sintered pads to be used on track days as well.

Some new discs are sold with a thin film of oil on them to prevent corrosion. I would make sure they are degreased before you start.
