Possible stupid speedo question
« on: 08 March 2018, 07:46:35 pm »
Hi guys, I have recently replaced my dials with white ones and followed the instructions on the link on the site. I Plugged the speedo back in and tried it, everything seems to work fine, rev counter fuel guage, all the lights. I wanted to check the speedo and as the mot is up and its on a sorn I dont want to risk riding it down the street.

As the speedo is electronic, if I put the bike on the stand and put it into gear should the speedo work then? I am assuming the speedo drive is in the gearbox.

I did say it was a stupid question sorry :o

No such thing as a stupid question but putting the bike on the centre stand in gear and revving it is not a sensible thing to do, one slight nudge and you could be looking at a write-off.

You'll be able to check whether the speedo is working when you take the bike in for the MOT if there's an issue you'll be MOT'd and be able to ride it up and down the street to your hearts content.

The speedo's driven from the front wheel not the gearbox.

One way to test it would be to download a speed app on your phone, activate it, put the phone in your pocket then go for a ride. Get to 30mph then pull over and check the speed on the app to see if its close

The app I use

I stuck mine on the main stand when I had speedo issues.  Just put it in 1st or 2nd at tickover it will be enough to see if it reads.
If it falls off the stand for any reason it’s off on its own!

Reggit, tried what you said, center stand, put it into second but grabbed the front brake. It works, I feel better now knowing, time to move onto the next mod  :)

Keep the front brake pulled on hard and stay sat on the bike, if it should then roll forward off the stand which it would not, cos front wheel is in the ground it would stall anyway at a fast tick over.
That is  a gearbox driven speedo not the 600 front end driven.
