Focer font of knowledge AV experts
« on: 05 January 2018, 04:01:24 pm »
I am trying to plug in a PS2 into my tv but the ps2 only has phono outs Red White Yellow and the problem is those sockets are at the back of the tv which is on the wall and although I managed to get them in it can not stay like that.
But i have accessible connections at the bottom which I can get to, the first 2 pictures are from the tv manual shows how to make the connection so I brought a 4 pole 3.5mm/ 3 phono in the last picture and plugged in but just get lines on the screen and a buz with very low sound of the PS2.

Although the manual shows the tv socket as being a phono it is actually a 3.5 socket like the one on the far right marked HP which is for the headphone.

So what am I doing wrong focers

Might sound silly bit have you definitely plugged them into the right colours in the 3 to 1 lead? I've mixed up white and yellow a fair few times in the past 😅 I have the exactly same set up for my kids nintendo wii and it works fine?
If not I'm sure darrsi will be along soon to solve the issue for you haha

Unfortunately i know sod all about gaming, or the machines, although if it was in front of me it wouldn’t be so much of an issue.
See if this helps at all, especially noting if there’s a setting in the PS2 to change from RGB to YPbPr, and see if it helps at all?

Are you sure that’s a mini jack input?

Highly unlikely for a manual to get that wrong, plus it does say “component audio”.

The AV3 description above that is just the channel input.

Also going from a Composite cable (yellow, red, white) straight to a Component input (RGB) doesn’t make any sense to me?

Haven actually tried a phono type plug in the socket but the 3.5 jack gos in just like it should if it was correct also you cannot separate out vidio and left and right phono to just 1 phono can you as it only has two connections, the outer metal and the inner male plug ? unless the left and right get put into one as mono and the video gos on its own.

Just been informed it’s unlikely the PS2 has Component out......so you’re stuffed.

Sounds like an excuse for a new telly  :D

Here are the actual leads and how I am setting them up --connected before you start (Tommy ) - the ps2 is the Y R W with the square plug on the end on the left of the picture

The tv has HDMI - USB Optical, you name it - but the ps 2 only has the cable in the picture. AS I said I can successfully plug the PS2 using YRW phono to phono direct to tv but those connections are at the back of the tv which is mounted on the wall and when the plugs are in they hit the tv mount bracket so I have wedged a block of cardboard behind to take the pressure off.

So am looking at other ways to plug in and then found the info in the manual which is supposed to work.

Just for future reference, those mini jack to Video/Audio short cables aren’t actually all wired the same, as i found out at work.
I think it’s Sony ones that are wired differently for their own equipment at the mini jack end.

So basically if you were to have one of these connected to non Sony equipment then you may need to join the wrong colours together, ie: white to yellow, etc, to make them compatible.

So the photo only shows composite cables, they won’t work with a component socket at all.

You can buy Composite to HDMI converters, dunno how much they would cost though?

I know it's the easy way out but you could just buy one of these?

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F273000147427

Plugs into the ps2 then you can just use a standard HDMI cable

OK I will try swapping around combos but before I do will it damage anything and also why is there a 4th section on the 3.5 jack when only 3 go in

It’s not 4, only 3 are wired.

Get a 3RCA to HDMI converter on Ebay, for under a tenner.

All of the cheap ones are China but I did read this on one of the listings
Set PS2 component video output to #Y Cb/Pb Cr/Br# before using the converter

So as you already have mentioned Darrsi I am going to try that now

I am trying to plug in a PS2 into my tv but the ps2 only has phono outs Red White Yellow and the problem is those sockets are at the back of the tv which is on the wall and although I managed to get them in it can not stay like that...

Is your problem with the back connection that the wall-mounted TV does not sit back on the wall enough with the phono lead connectors plugged into the back of the TV? If so, have you considered a right-angled phono adapter which will not stick out so much from the back of the TV. Here is an example:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Phono-Degree-Socket-Adaptor-Converter-Black/dp/B01D0BCRRY/ref=sr_1_20/260-1881042-2555820?ie=UTF8&qid=1515174389&sr=8-20&keywords=right+angle+phono+plug

(sorry, your explanation about the bracket being in the way of the connection was not visible when I posted the above.)

Yes thats my problem and the right angle ones dont help as thelip of the bracket on the wall falls exactly on the plugs if I cut off the lip then the 90degree ones would work
