Oil level window
« on: 15 December 2017, 05:56:15 pm »
Evening all,

This a part introductions, part cry for help.

I recently fell in love with the FZS 100 and bought one (it's my first big bike since passing my Mod 2), I will be taking steady till I get used to riding a bigger big.

The problem I have is the oil level window is brown........not clear, so I can't see anything inside. I found a post on here pondering if you could get to it when the clutch cover is removed, having a gander on youtube to see, I don't think this would be possible (unless anyone has successfully done this). A few places has asked about oil flush, but people seem to be against that due to the clutch.

Is it possible to take the drain plug out (thinking its the bolt on the left hand side of the belly pan) and get something inside to clean off the window?

I haven't got the oil warning light on, and it's running fine.

The bike has done 36,000 miles.

Cheers in advanced

Don't mean to state the obvious, but are you sure the window isn't completely filled and what you are looking at is actually the oil ( brown) and not a discoloured window?

If it were me, id unscrew the plug slowly until its on the last thread, then just let oil out slowly under control while watching the window. If you see the level appear then its been overfilled. If it all runs out before you see anything change, then id flush the engine out. Im pretty sure you cant get anything in to reach from the drain hole, and anyway thats too risky. Engines can be damaged by being overfilled

Agree with Agricola, over filled engine with pressurise the crankcases and cause that pressure to possibly blow oil seals.
You sure someone has not filled the foccing thing up with Marmite.

My guess would be the same as others in guessing it is just over filled, Get a mate to help lean the bike over the opposite way and see if the level drops.

I once changed oil on my gen1 1000 and put too much in so that the oil level filled the whole window.
I put a small jug under the sump plug and eased it off untill oil started to seep out slowly whilst my son watched the oil sight glass, when he saw it level with the top mark he told me to tighten the plug back up. We measured the amount of oil removed,  it was less than 125ml.
So it could be overfilled only by a small amount :)  .
Also how level is the ground where you are checking the oil level?  I always check mine in my garage as I did the garage base myself and know it is flat, the bubble in my level is as near to the middle as I could get get it.

Is the sight glass on the right hand side like the 600? If so what happens when you put it on the side stand?

Yes, it was overfilled lol, should of thought of that. :wall

Was in my back garden, nice and level, and on centre stand.

Ah well, thanks all for your replies, I'm sure I'll be calling on your expertise in the near future again.

Were you checking it with a warm engine (5 mins or so after switching off) or with a cold engine?

You should normally check it when warm or you get a higher reading as all the oil drains out of the head etc.

Really?!?! I've always checked mine cold? When it's running there's no oil in the window? When it's off/cold I have it half way up the window, that's how I've always had every bike??

The owners manual  for the GEN1 states that the engine should be run for a few minutes to warm up then left for a few minutes for the oil level to settle before checking the level with the bike on the center stand. I don't want to speak for everyone but I believe that most owners myself included find that unless the oil level is on or near the maximum mark the oil warning light will come on prematurely as it works on oil level rather than oil pressure and is usually over cautious.

you turn it off and let it settle but it should be warm not cold. Checking it cold will give you a false (higher) reading.

Don't know about the Mighty 1000 but the Mini 600 oil level sight glass has two marks on the case Min & Max, I fill mine to the Max mark when the lump is warm.
I don't know if it the same with all the 600's, but, if my oil is at the lower 'Min' mark hard powering out of corners causes the oil light to flicker and stop as soon as the bike is upright, it don't recall if it did it more on the Left Handers or Right Handers.

The bike was full serviced when I picked it up and the oil light flickered the second day I had the bike, and to be honest was alarmed and thought to my self have a bought a bummer? But that was 5 years ago and it has never been an issue since. but at that time the level was down just about the minimum level.

What can happen is when you do an oil change with a new filter (always should) and fill the bike up to halfway between Min & Max, then when you start the bike and the new filter fills with oil and of course the filter never gives up that amount of oil, so the level is depleted by that amount dropping the oil level in the sight glass by that amount.
The amount of oil needed to take the level from Min to Max is a small amount.

Some one mentioned in this post that the 'Oil Light' does not work on a pressure switch but on a level switch, so I guess hard powering out of a corner will cause the oil to rush to the back of the engine as the front of the bike rises and the bike surges forward giving a false level reading.

I had a problem with the sight glass going cloudy and stained over the winter stand up.

I ordered the part below from at https://yambits.co.uk/fzs1000-fazer-engine-oil-level-window-p-15258.html

Products
 ------------------------------------------------------
 1 x FZS1000 Fazer Engine Oil Level Window (MLP043) = £11.99 (Inc. VAT)
£9.99 (Ex. VAT)

 Sub-Total: £11.99
Delivery (Royal Mail SIGNED FOR to Mainland UK): £4.92
INCLUSIVE OF VAT @ 20% IF APPLICABLE: £2.82

I believe you cut away the rubber seal and howk it out with a screwdriver.
Then tap the new one into place with a correctly sized socket.

There are vids on YouTube that show how it's done!
