new trip
« on: 16 October 2017, 12:16:19 pm »
coming up in may(well for me it is)
going on my bike(tracer 700)

this is the 1st time for me since the 70's, I'm going on a 5 day trip to scotland
going with a gang of 11 on our bikes, there will be 2 groups  fast one and slow.
I fit in the latter.
we're meeting some where near glasgow to fort william along the coast to j'ogroats and then to edinborough, home.
each journey is 120 miles staying in a youth hostel at each stop(4).
now the only thing I think I need just incase!
water proofs(if it rains)
under wear,jean and T shirts.
am I missing anything
just waiting  for names of place we're stopping at.
also has anyone done this trip.
If I wanted to make a life-long career out of
working with the mentally retarded I would
have opened a Harley Davidson Dealership!

Are you going Fort William to JOG via Inverness and up the east side, or via Ullapool, Durness up the west and top? Highly recommend the west side. I did it a couple of weeks ago. Fantastic scenery. Also when coming back to Edinburgh, use the road across the Grampians via Braemar, Glenshee and Blairgowrie. Recommended by someone on here, and it is fantastic.

Yes take waterproofs.....

Another tip, pinch some of those 'diesel gloves' from petrol stations to wear under your sopping wet bike gloves  :(

extra socks will be inc.lol
as water(rain)I have water proof over gloves/trousers and jacket so hopefully I'll stay dry.
not sure what rout we're taking.
some scot/lads are joining to inc the organiser so I would think he'll know the best route seeing that he's a scottish chap.
also all these lads are deaf to so more than likely I'll be the only one who can hear.
but I dont have good hearing though so I wear hearing aids and also I can do hand sign, not the best but I get along.

Don't forget, when in Jockland it's strictly low or no alcohol whilst riding. it's 50mg per 100ml of blood compared to 80mg in the rest of blighty

Treat everything in life the way a dog would- if you can't eat it or foc it, forget it.

To now, the focus has been on the clothing. Have you considered the Bike?

Being relatively new (?) its probably already stacked with gadgets, heated grips / appropriate Tyres - although May, it shouldn't be too extreme, however could still be wet.

Watch out for Belach na Ba, if any in the party are new riders are not 100% confident - I did it because it had to be done even though I'm a fairly inexperienced rider,
but it scared the sh*t out of me.  but I wasn't happy.... though the view from the top was cracking!

I did Belach Na Ba 4 weeks ago, no problem. Well apart from the crap car drivers who couldn't take a hairpin without doing a 3 point turn. Recommend it's ridden from the Applecross side, west to east. Then you get the best view down

There are a lot of great videos series on YouTube for this route the NC500 or NC767 I think the longer one is called. A channel called Mapped and TheMissendenflyer both great watches, gives you a good flavour for routes and timescales.

Just had a look at your map. I did the NC500 last month, and most of your route. When you do the Applecross and Lochinver loops be careful as these are very narrow single track roads with passing places but lots of blind bends. Be careful of sheep, Highland cattle and worse of all f***ing locals in muddy landrovers who don't give way to anybody.
Enjoy the road through Blairgowrie, Glenshee and Braemar. It's a cracker  8)
