Fazer engine into '98 R1
« on: 17 July 2017, 08:46:37 pm »

I'm pretty sure that the good old Gen 1 Fazer 1000 engine is a '98 - '99 R1 motor, probably with a few tweaks to the cams and ignition, is this correct?

The reason i'm asking is that a mate of mine has broken a valve in his race R1 motor and is looking at at a hefty repair bill (again, £1100 last time), I asked if it would be cheaper to just stuff another engine in it but he said the '98 - '99 engines are getting a bit rare now and are commanding big money. Then I thought about the Fazer, they have the same engine don't they?

if there is a mounting point for the R1 frame on the head, he is quite happy to source a cylinder head and use the Fazer bottom end.

Does anyone know if this can be done, Gen 1 Fazer into '98 R1???? Or is there something that just flat out rules it out?

Anyone help?

Thanks.

So, if he fitted an R1 head it would work?? Can you just fit an R1 head onto a Fazer engine?

I think the main problem comes from the fact that the R1 used downdraught carbs, so the layout of space within the frame is going to be different, for both carbs and air box.

Hedgetrimmer, if an R1 head is put onto a Fazer bottom end (if its possible), then use the R1 carbs and airbox which would fit onto the head, then put the whole lot into an R1, would that work?

I really have no idea. All I can think of right now is that the gearbox ratios are likely to be different, but I suppose that doesn't really rule it out entirely. Apparently, the Fazer has a heavier crank than the R1, but no idea if this translates into anything unworkable - bore and stroke are the same for e.g. It was apparently done to reduce vibes compared with the R1. Gudgeon pin sizing?
The only way I think you could really know if it would work, is if you had access to full parts bins for both bikes and physically try it. Not something I think I would risk any outlay on without being sure, and so I'm no help to you  :\  Sorry.
