Name that tick!

From the sound of my engine, what would you say the cause of the tick was? I was thinking valve clearance or cam chain adjuster.

Sounds like cam chain noise to me, what sort of mileage has the bike done?
And does it go away when warmed up?

I read somewhere that Fazer FZS 600 Cam Chains do sometimes get a bit noisy before the adjuster clicks on to the next notch or whatever it is it locates in.
It could also be that the tappets/Valve setting spaces need re-shimming.

In the past I have had bikes with a slappy cam chains and it produced a noise heavier than that, but of course the sound could vary from bike to bike.

One bike (DOG) I had a few years back the cam chain was so loose that it rubbed/slapped its way through the chain tunnel and oil leaked through the hole it made (About 3 mm wide by about 8 mm long)  :lol

Better to have a chain slightly loose than a bugger to tight that's for sure.

If it is the cam chain I personally would not be in an immediate rush to do something about it, you might find in a few miles that it clicks over and the adjuster takes up the slack and it runs quieter again. But you need to make your own mind up on that decision.

Looking at what we can see of the bike in the video it looks well used, has it been maintained well? Is it a new bike to you? (New Member in FOC-U)
Anyway as someone else helpfully suggested introduce yourself in the introduction section of the forum and let see a few pics of your steed.

Oh yeah! Welcome to the nut house.

My chain was ticking away for several months as the bike is a commuter plodding along in traffic most days, rather than giving it plenty of welly.
Then one day just after i started it outside work and was putting my lid on it just suddenly went silent.
I honestly thought something was very wrong as the silence was almost deafening as i'd got so used to the noise.
As Tommy says there really is no need to panic at all, it's most likely just in between clicks on the adjuster and will more than likely sort itself out when it's ready.

I took the bike for a run last night and it seemed to quieten down. Can someone give me quick steps on how to unstick the cam chain tensioner, if that is the most likely problem.

That sounds lumpy now, cam chain noise is similar to a sewing machine, a much lighter noise than that.
Have you ever had the carbs balanced before?

I bought the bike in November last year and havnt done it myself. Is it a big job? And is it OK to be ridden until I can get around to doing it in a week or so?

If the carbs are out of balance then it will just run rough, which is what i'm hearing.
It's not doing any harm, but you're just not getting the best out of the bike.
Once you have them balanced you'll be pleasantly surprised by the difference in running.

It's not a major job at all, but you need to make sure the air filter is in good nick, and do a quick TPS check to make sure the needle's in the right position on the rev counter at 5000rpm.

balancing the carbs wont take the noise away i would take your cct out give a good clean and refit it that could be enough to clear the rattle up

My 1998 Fazer has gone 59.500 km and there is no noise from cam chain. But my brothers 1998 Fazer has only 32.000 km on the clock and the cam chain on the bike sounded like a diesel machine and he had to change the cam chain. Now it sounds wonderful.

I'm not on about losing cam chain noise, the bike when warmed up just sounds a bit rough to me.
