Speedo started going mad.
« on: 07 April 2017, 11:01:18 pm »

I went out for a ride today and on the way home the speedo needle started waving around randomly, only slightly to begin with but by the time I got back it was thrashing about all over the place. When I checked it, the cable had been rubbing on the disc and had worn through to expose a tiny patch of wire that was shorting out on the disc, so I've rerouted it and I'm going to have to sort it properly tomorrow. I'll wrap some insulating tape round it for the time being but has anyone got any ideas for a more permanent repair without replacing the cable?

Mines been rerouted with temporary insulating tape for about 8 or 9 years now.  I think i treated it to a new bit of insulating tape last time the front wheel was off

dont know if you can slip some heat wrap over and down?

If not try some of the self amalgamating tape on it. That's the stuff you can seal pipes with.

Treat everything in life the way a dog would- if you can't eat it or foc it, forget it.

tape will work to sort out the shorting out
simple repair
-remove speedo, snip and solder in a few inch pieces (keeps the length)wrapping in insulation tape on each wire
if you have heat shrink add it to outer sleeve before hand and shrink once job is done to give a more water resistant finish

I have to admit I went the cheap, easy and available route. I wrapped a bit of insulating tape around the wound (temporarily)  Like Jules, I'll maybe treat it to a new piece in 8 or 9 years :D  If it works, it works.
