Valve clearances
« on: 03 April 2017, 09:28:15 pm »
Hi Foc people, Please forgive my ignorance but would grey gasket sealant on the valve cover rubber gasket indicate that it has been off before.
Also where can I obtain feeler gauges that measure 0.11 (intake) and 0.21 (Exhaust) both the minimum gap but mine are extremely close on cyl 1 (only one checked so far) and my gauges are in increments of 0.05mm.
Thanks

Hi thanks teecee I managed to get hold of a set that did the job, I have 5 on the exhaust valves that need adjusted.I am quite surprised as i thought this was the first check at 28k as i purchased the bike at supposedly 12000k 4 years ago, backed up by Mots and the bike was in very clean cond. When inspecting the valve cover there was grey gasket sealant in places between the valve cover and the rubber( (very amateurish looking application) which has raised my suspicions about this bike which is a shame because I thought i had a good un and have enjoyed every moment in the saddle on this machine and have had many comments on how nice the bike looked. ... Can you tell i'm a tad disappointed :o

Im surprised you have that many that are out of spec at that milage. Are you using the right specs? I thought one of mine was out until I read the FAQ and realised the specs in the manual were wrong. The correct spec for the exhaust valves is 021-0.30mm

Yes I am aware of the specs but they are all on the lower side anyway. cyl1 .20 .22 / cyl2 .22 .22/ cyl3 .19 .19/ cyl4 .20.20 on exhaust valves.
