Switching Topbox
« on: 08 March 2017, 11:04:59 am »
Hi All,

I bought my bike with this topbox:

20170304 200421
20170304 200421

20170304 172037
20170304 172037

The guy who fitted it also had the size boxes (he kept them), and had to make some bracketry for it all to fit as it wasn't a standard rack for the bike.
I want to keep the topbox, but would like to fit it to the standard brackets as it's much neater. Is that possible, or will I have to get a complete new set of bracket and box?

Cheers,
Ben

There's either an addition or just a mod in the first photo, i can't see it too clearly to be honest.
I can see a sports rack underneath though and that is not designed for the weight of a top box.
I had one break in half on me, then found out the manufacturers weight recommendation was 5kg.

That looks like a Rentec sports rack underneath the Givi Wingrack.

Personally, I would avoid using the sports rack as they are cheap and nasty and are not designed to take a box. Stick with the Givi. If you don't want the full wingrack then remove that and get the standard Givi arms instead.

If you (or anyone else) wants a Givi box and rack, mine's still for sale on here.

I think I'll do that at some point. I've had the box off the bike until today, and on the ride in this morning really noticed that every bump made the box shake and rattle. Not convinced the racking etc. is strong enough for Londons potholed roads.

I wouldn't call the Rentecs 'cheap and nasty'. I've had mine on for 12 years, and as long as you keep it painted and the rust away it's fine. But it's sold as a 'sports rack' for strapping things to. Not for mounting a top box

A Givi box on a Givi rack wont rattle around unless (like most) you have lost the little rubber bits from on top of the rack. Then they rattle like buggery :)

Ear plugs in and you will never notice it though and will be thankful that you have somewhere to store your crash helmet whilst you do things and have somewhere other than inside your jacket to put that cold bottle of milk that the Mrs asked you to pick up while you're out.

With BB on this. Try some heavy duty adhesive draught excluder on the mount plate. I bang round London with a Givi rack n box every day without a sound.

Interesting you say that - there's only one of the four little rubber bits on the base plate (if that's what you call it). I've ordered some more of the rubber bungs to see if that makes a difference. I'm guessing it will.

Still not too keen on the industrial look of the rack itself though. The racks designed for the bike look a lot better than mine:

Know what you mean seen as you have the full blown rack.

Your pic above is exactly what I have fitted on the same colour bike - picture didn't load earlier. Much better

Most of us have these with boxes

Which look like this when fitted

You have the full Givi Wingrack fitted. Many people want these as they take the panniers too.
Most people only have the standard Givi rack (in the last picture you posted) which is a lot simpler (and a lot cheaper).
