Is a day trip to the TT possible?
« on: 22 January 2017, 08:35:15 am »
Hi All,

Just wondering if it's possible to do a day trip to the TT as foot passengers?  I know it would be a mega long day, getting to Liverpool, ferry, racing, ferry, home but can it be done?

If on foot, where would you get to watch the racing from that's walkable from the ferry>

Has anyone done it?

Desperate to go one year but can't stay overnight because we have young children who still need to go to school, I reckon we could farm them out for a day though  :)
Money doesn't buy happiness, but it buys beer, and that helps!

Do they still do flights from Heathrow. Did that in the mid 90's as it was cheaper to put all the bikes in a long wheelbase transit with all the luggage on the ferry and the rest of us flew.

As you said it's a long trip for one day.
Why not go for practice week as that's usually half term week and just as much fun with all the usual evening entertainment in Douglas.
If you do go for one day then Quarterbridge would be your best viewing point as it's only a 15 to 20 minute walk from the ferry port. (and there's a pub there !!)

I could change my opinion, but then we'd both be wrong.

We ought to organize a LOFO/Foccer trip for next year. I'm well up for going one year, never been and am dying to go but I hate anything that has become too commercialised.
Got to make an exception for the TT experience though.

If you're going to organize a LOFO/ Foccer trip then you need to start now as you'll need to book the ferry tickets as soon as they become available (which is usually as soon as this year's TT is over).
You can always get accommodation, especially if you're camping, but ferry tickets sell out fast.

Just seen this on Biker Booty, might be some use for you Kitcrazy
‎Scott Machinto Biker Booty · 2 hrs ·         Isle of Man TT 2017 ferry tickets  £50 Camborne, Cornwall  I've got 2 return tickets for this year's TT. A couple of mates can't make it this year unfortunately so looking to get their deposits back for them. Both depart from Liverpool on the 31st May at 0945, one returns on 12th June at 1600 and the other is on the 13th June at 0730. Both are for rider and bike. Both have £194 left to pay. Please feel free to share to anyone you think may be looking to go.

Easiest way is fly if going for the day but lots of people book the ferry early then when it comes to paying the balance on 28 Jan they can't and the booking gets cancelled.
Best bet is call Regency Travel who are the official TT travel Agency and see what they can do.
Ferry goes to Douglas and there's loads of viewing spots there.

If you have never done the IOM TT you really should, I have been fortunate enough to have been able to go three times now, Practice week and the TT. For me it would be the Practice week every time, not QUITE so crowded, the practice/racing is just as fast as riders are doing their very best to get qualified. Plus the Island is a beautiful place to see. Things are a bit pricey as it's one of the few income means for the Island. But the locals are extra friendly. Another good viewing point is Parliament Square and another bonus Is you can sit outside the pub in the Square quaffing pints of delicious ale and necking back yummy food.
Plus it is a chance to get some decent IOM/TT memorabilia. I bought a great TT paddock jacket whilst there in 2010. There are lots of enamelled badges and rider clothing for sale.
I have not been now for 3 years and writing this has motorvated me into doing something about that. It's a great experience and the first time you see the bikes as they howl past the church at the top of Bray Hill and over the cross roads your heart will almost burst with disbelief and shock that a bike can be ridden at those speeds on effectively a B road with stone walls lining the way traffic light and lamp posts and every other obstacle you can image and all at speeds that I can only dream of. If your top speed is less than 190mph forget it your finishing last. I am so pleased that Guy is coming back to the Island with Honda, there is a colourful character and a person more deserving of a TT win you will not find.

Try and go with a small group of mates if you go for the week, 4 is about right as digs are easier to find and you are all together. We decided to hire a people carrier and not take the bikes each time we went, so many visitors lose their lives on the Island thinking that they can ride the 30 something mile course at speed, when in reality most ride the course at 60 to 70 mph in the places where the boys who race the Island are doing 190 mph and yet each year some forfeit their lives trying. Bike at home in the shed = no temptation.

Book up digs long before the event as prices go up the nearer to the racing, also book you Steam Package Ferry tickets on line as it's cheaper and you know you will get on the first ferry available. The crossing can be a bit rough if the weather is windy so if you suffer from travel or sea sickness take some travel pills. The TT is an experience that every biker should do at least once in their life, it is unbelievable the speeds these boys do.
My heart is thumping now just writing this and re-living it. I gotta go again. :lol

Tommy ,
I've just paid my balance today and reading your posts has got me more excited ( if that's possible ),I've been dying to do it for years and the opportunity came up financially and me and the mrs thought we've gotta do it ,luckily my in laws live in Heysham near the ferry so they can look after the dog for the week.
I'm too old and arthritic to do camping and not quick enough to book a hotel so we decided on glamping,
got goosebumps now writing this and thinking about it ... can't wait  :woot

You will love it, the racing/practice/qualifying is just so exciting, I have done a lot of attending circuit road races over the years, and have loved it (I was a grease monkey for a friend who raced a Morgo Bonneville years ago, in mid 70's) and I had access to the pits. That was exciting enough but take away the grass run off the areas and the tyre walls and bails of straw on all of the sharp bends and replace them with stone walls, telegraph poles and metal road sign posts, then add dips and undulations associated with normal roads, not forgetting manhole covers and white lines and you got yourself a tiger by the tail.
For me the IOM TT is the greatest Adrenalin rush I have ever had. OK I have had some rushes when the arse end of my bike has kicked out on me and scatted me off up the road, but that's over in 20 seconds or so, these TT rushes go on for 30 plus miles a lap, I feel exhausted after a race and all I have done is sit or stand there and watch, the TT riders are incredibly fit, some of the old classic riders are in their 60's FFS, and they still fly.

Watch out for Jenny Tinmouth, not only is she a hotty she is one bad arsed competitor on the track, if I could ride one tenth as good as she does I would be one happy boy, and when she hangs her arse over the side when cornering :eek  WELL  :b

Cheers Tommy , I know what you mean about Jenny  :lol  I went to a few BSB rounds last year and got her autograph ( my stepdaughter mad for autographs ) , doesn't she still hold the title of fastest woman at the TT ??
I have heard at races people slagging her off for being at the back but I've always said to them that she's still quicker than they'll ever be !! And Kudos to her for doing it, not sure if she's racing in bsb this year though.
I'm going race week but because I booked it 2 days !!! After the ferry released I could only get a sailing that meant I'd miss the first superbike race , gutted but there's still plenty of racing, got tickets for main grandstsnd for the senior and creg for the  superstock and there was some hospitality thing to watch the MotoGP mugello race thing that mrs wanted so booked that too.
The Mrs is so into it now that she's and watched all my TT TiVo recordings and films that she's talking about maybe doing the classic too, and who am I too argue with she who must be obeyed  :lol

I have to admit it I am a tart :rolleyes
if you have time watch that clip right through, its quite long but it just shows how that girl rides, dropping into corners cranked right over it looks like she is going to run out of track and she powers on around the bend with maximum gas. I love it.

She caught all the other riders and passed em even with the missed gear change.
Was that the new blade SP she was riding ? I hope it does good for my man McGuinness this year and take back the lap record from grumpy Dunlop. I also wonder will she be there this year or has she given up doing the TT

Ha ha! Glad you noticed the missed cog swop, made her lose quite a distance and she fell back away from the rider she was gaining on, it seemed to make her more determined and when she passed him she did it with vengeance. I love watching Jenny ride, it puts a huge smile on my face, she has style, courage and determination

When you look at women competing in most sports whether is running or any other physical trial they can not compete with men, I know it's a strength issue that men are generally physically stronger therefore are faster, stronger and have more physical endurance. But women often have more determination than guys and what they lack in physical strength they more than make up for in dogged determination, they don't give up where often blokes will just say 'Oh! Bollock s to it' and give up, where as women just keep going and carry on until it's done.

Well that's our Jenny for you, she has dogged determination, she does not ever give up and she has the riders skill set to match all the blokes on the track, no ones says of Jenny that 'she is just a girl' cos she can kick their arses. And the icing on the very sweet cake is she is incredibly fit in every sense of the word. :rolleyes

The CBR1000 Blade that she has been riding up till now has been her own bike, she spins her own spanners and get her hands greasy. But for 2017 she rides officially as a Honda team rider on the new team CBR1000.
I really hope and pray that this is her year.

In some ways I would like her to not race the Island again, it's gruelling and harsh and it rips people apart.
I going to spend a bit of time reading up on her schedule/calendar for 2017.

Any way Graham you and the Mrs will have a brilliant time.
I'm sure and you will come back with lots of tales of manic speeds, daring overtakes, humungus wheelies and heart stopping moments. Not to mention a shed full of stuff that you purchased, badges, jackets, tee shirts, gloves, sew on patch badges, Oh! and don't forget to bring the Mrs back.

Thanks Tommy
I've been told categorically noooo wheelies I've tried explaining it's a fazer 1000 and it's a wheelie monster and any one wheel action would be purely accidental but she's not having it she's also told me no breaking the speed limit, to which I replied "on the Isle of Man my love ... never " she don't know that in places there are no speed limits  :lol
And as for bringing her back itll be the other way round she'd have to drag me back I reckon
