foccer font of knowledge - mirror hanging
« on: 04 December 2016, 10:21:52 am »
Hi Guys,

Just got a mirror to go over the fireplace, it's not mega heavy but certainly more than a picture of the same size, it's 94cm X 68cm.  It's already got a doubled up heavy gauge cord to hang it from.

I've never hung anything this heavy before so my question is, what fittings and how many?

My initial guess is 2 brown rawlplugs with screws placed about 10cm either side of the centre line.  Would that be ok?  would one be ok?  I'm guessing a large picture hook nailed into the wall certainly wouldn't be up to the job.
Money doesn't buy happiness, but it buys beer, and that helps!

I could change my opinion, but then we'd both be wrong.

I would replace the cord with wire. The thing with those hooks with 3 holes is that if your plaster is a bit iffy or thick and you don't get into some brick , the holes being so close can weaken the one next to it.
I don't do rain or threat there of. dry rider only with no shame.

Retired brickie here, I'm with Sharpie and Red also. 2 inch number 8 screws times 2, brown rawlplugs.
I personally would put the screws 3 or 4 inches in from either side of the mirror in the place you wish to hang the Mirror, that way the forces will be almost straight down,

(Also helps reduce the seesaw/swinging action associated with centre hanging)

Make sure that the fixings in the mirror frame itself are good.
Using 2 inch screw will ensure that the screws go into the brickwork or blockwork and not just into the plaster.
Another thing you can do is put a washer over the screws before screwing them into the wall they help stop the hanging wire lifting off the screws so easily.
