The dreaded first exup service..

30 k up but the valve was serviced two years ago..so will it be ok or will I get a snapper...I think you know the answer to that..:-(

The metal spacer/ bush at the other end of the valve is very loose and rattles like a bugger when it's cold, so I'm thinking plenty of copper slip either end and clean/ re grease the whole thing every 1000 miles or so. Sound about right? As for the snapped bolt, I have some decent worth timeserts, would you suggest drilling it out to fit one so I can keep the same bolt size as before, or just going up with the next size so it's beefier. And finally, oe cap heads or swap for stainless? Cheers fellers, best I get me makita out and find a sharp drill bit...

Hi ogri48,
Definitely change for stainless steel. The necessary sizes are M6x10mm (3) for the outer cover, M6x16mm(3) for the valve, M5x12mm for the pulley centre and M4x6mm for the bush end cover. Shame you've had a snapper, I was lucky with mine and got them all out with no problems. Personally I'd try and keep the same size bolts, but that just me.

Cheers Robbo, I was thinking just the same mate, theres not a lot of meat left on the edge if I drill it out bigger..so spent a lot of time fiddling about drilled a small hole, lots of plus gas around the snapped bolt, and heat applied to the exhaust casting and decent quality easy out - 2 hours later I'd got it out, used wurth 3 stage taps to clean up the threads, wire brushed the valve and back together with stainless.. had some in me box just gotta get some smaller ones for the cover and spindle, cheers for the sizes feller :-)

That it will mate. Gotta be worth just winding the valve plate retaining cap heads out once a month then back in with fresh copper slip do ya think?

Once a month is probably a bit excessive but I guess it depends on your usage. My bike is garaged and used for leisure throughout the year probably doing about 3-4k, I service the EXUP once or twice a year. If I leave it 12 months then the parts are definitely dry but after 6 months there's still signs of copper grease especially on the bolts, so about 9 months is probably optimal for me. Once I run out of copper grease I'm going to invest in some ceramic grease which in theory should last a bit longer and do a better job.

I use it three days a week ( Monday Tuesday Wednesday)all through the year for a 50 mile commute plus leisure in summer, live on a mountain just outside of Wales so there's a lot of wet and cold going on a fair bit of the time, wash the bike every Thursday and then fs 365 it. It must have been owned by a foccer or at the least an enthusiast for most of its life, it's in excellent condition  has a lot of sensible upgrades and the exup was really clean inside..the feller I bought it of ( he bought it from groombridge motorcycles)had it over a year just used it for track days so he wasn't a fettler, but there was still traces of copaslip on the cap heads even though it had been two years since the last valve strip. The ceramic grease is an interesting idea mate

I've used ceratec grease on my exup bolts for a while now....cheap enough on a well known auction site

I'm seriously considering cutting down some bolts and just using them as studs with nuts on a la exhaust style ..if


they do get stuck it wont matter cos you're just gonna remove the nuts..any thoughts ?? :eek

It would work,but seems a lot of bother when a set of good quality stainless allen headed bolts when fitted,negate the seized bolt scenario,in my opinion.

The other thing I think may work, is when your out and the engine is warm rev it past 7000 rpm (when the exup will be fully open ) and it will be less likely to stick.
I bought a 7000mile 04, really clean, well looked after. the valve was seized so bad I had to buy another, the original is still soaking in oil 2 years later ( its a mission now !) I think riding gently and not allowing the valve to fully open causes it to stick and stay in half and half position.

When I got my fazer I went to check the valve and the bolts were siezed so I left it. Bike is a daily commuter and now nudging 95k , never had an issue with the valve... maybe everyday use doesn't give a chance for it to sieze.

Makes sense mate. Every time you use it the valve checks itself out on start up so it's gotta help being used regular. I had a vfr 750 that had been toured for 30k then put  in storage for ten years before the yam as me commuter, it was a great bike but being sat still all that time did it no favours at.

Picked up some stainless cap heads when I was working in Peterborough last week so changed the exuo valve screws today. It's gotten noisy again, looks shiny where the valve has been rattling against the inside so I chamfered it a little more on the ends and polished it, have to see how it is once the copper slip has burnt off
