R1 seat

I've got a mint low mile 2003 Fazer. I want to streetfighter it without destroying any of the original parts. Does anyone know if a R1 2002/2003 seat unit can go on without cutting the rear frame? Front end's easy, got that worked out already. Cheers in advance.

I've got an R6 seat on mine, I didn't do the work but the subframe has been altered to suit it. Whoever did it has done a cracking job, the pillion seat release cable and lock are all there and the angles all look right. The seat has been altered slightly at the front and all fits nice so I'm guessing the R1 unit would work too.

I'd be more tempted to keep the mint low mileage foxeye as is and modify the hell out of an older more weathered bike.. Im genuinely surprised yamaha dont supply you with a bike MrRossi

Carter looks nice matey. The idea is to have 2 bikes in one. Use as streetfighter most of the time but with a socket set and an hour put it back to full tourer mode! I've got full luggage as well you see. Can't have another bike because the garage is only 24' long and got 2 bikes and a 66 Mustang!

I assume you just mean the tail end as most "streetfighters" are without the fairing...  Maybe look to some shorter dog bone linkages to raise the rear for starters?.. Cheap enough and will alter stance and handling.. Easily removed and dont have to be permanent fixture. An aftermarket undertray and tail tidy also if you want to go a step further.. I'd be interested to see a quick release sportbike seat unit that doesnt require modification of the subframe..

I looked at that one when I was planning to build one. Saw another with a 916 or similar seat unit on too, that looked like it could fit on without altering the subframe.  There's the old Harris F1 tailpiece but not sure if they're still available. They were quite big so may cover/hide the standard subframe.
If you tap in "motorbike race seat unit " into that auction site there are lots of different types which could be adapted, the downside is that you need to try them on to the bike to see if they'd do the job.

Cheers Carter, I'll have a look around. I've got a couple of mates who are pro bike builders but they're too far away and busy to mess around with this. If it had a detachable  subframe it would be so easy! Actually I might do that myself. No reason why it can't be modified to be bolt on. What do you reckon?

There's always the option of a small frame inside the seat unit that could bolt directly to the standard subframe ?

I've not got a standard frame on mine so can't picture how to go about it tho sorry. I'm guessing it's do-able all the same.
I put an LC seat and tailpiece on my old Harris but made it so the original battery box, fittings and seat unit could go back on.

Maybe it's time to reach for the hacksaw
Then again, maybe it's time to have my tools confiscated !

carters is pretty much my yamaha look
all my bikes have been cruisers apart from my yams that always become streetfighters
house move is forcing a sale of current chop so bought a fzs as a hack
when funds allow a new cruiser the fzs is getting fully stripped and going like carters
-could do with a standard subframe to make a universal jig me thinks

its a shame its a welded on subframe really - with my 87 fz600 (not fz6) i was able to buy a subframe then weld up a holding jig and play away with the arse end untill it had tail i wanted
just realised how kinky that sounded but thats bondage 101 learn to weld up a holding cage while you play with the arse end lol

I say get the grinder to it, the stock sub frames massive and would be difficult to cover with most other seat units. I get the fact that its messing up a perfectly good fazer but its not like its going to be worth a fortune keeping it standard
