Stumble/Misfire just off idle
« on: 26 August 2016, 10:36:43 am »
My bike has this mildly annoying habit of stumbling, misfiring, hesitating just off idle when pulling away

Once the bike has fully warmed up after approximately 4 miles it totally disappears and is very smooth indeed

Has anybody got any ideas where I should start looking or is this normal for a carbed bike?

Hi Marc

I see you list your main bike as a Fazer 600, in which case you would probably do better to ask this question in the 600 area of the forum. :)

Probably normal.  If the carbs are stock, the pilot circuit fuelling is going to be a shade lean and with a cool engine that could give your symptoms.  However, it would be made worse if you've some gumming in the pilot jets.  Try a tank or two of fuel with Redline fuel additive to clean the carbs.

And a set of plugs will do no harm unless they are fresh.

Starting these and letting them idle to warm up can "wet" a plug easily.

I use Shell Optimax in every 2nd or 3rd tankful of fuel as it contains additives that clean the fuel system. This seems to prevent issues with gumming as I don't use my bike much over the winter months and in 7 years of ownership I've not had any fuelling issues so far.

My bike had a similar issue with yours and I found corrosion and a broken pin in the coils where the leads fit into the coil. Worth a look.

Hi Marc

I had a similar issue recently with my Gen 1 Fazer 1000 in that it would cut out after starting when pulling away and also when filtering and especially cornering at below 2000 revs. (Gave me a few frights)
My mechanic friend went through all the carb and jet cleaning and balancing procedure with no improvement, eventually deciding that it was an electrical problem.
After much more head scratching and heating/cooling disconnecting and reconnecting he discovered the ECU or CDi Igniter unit as he called it was faulty and after replacing that with one from eBay the bike has run perfectly.
Just something to keep in mind if you are unable to resolve the problem.

Cheers

Dave...
