If you have any work done by a garage it must be of a certain standard or you have the right to complain and the garage is legally bound to investigate. If they do not or refuse you would have to take legal proceedings, usually via small claims. Most major garage chains will settle out of court as their legal excess is often more than the claim would be. Appreciate your issue here is with The AA but they did not do the actual work. You should have some paperwork from the AA detailing what the fault was and what was done to rectify it. If the work is substandard then it would think be down to Halfords to rectify rather than the AA....this will however depend on who the "contract" is with which will be in your AA T&C's/small print.
