Choice of 2 bikes for work
« on: 21 September 2015, 06:06:10 pm »
This shouldn't be as long winded as a "which bike" because I've got it down to 2.

90 odd miles a day and with a full 35 litre top box and big heavy ruck sack strapped to the pillion, up to London and back all year round.

Bit of a Brucie in that I can now keep the Tiger and the Fazer in addition to a new work bike.

The choices are:-

2007 - 2010 CBF1000 with ABS. Should be a good commuter with comfort and reliability and have the ability for a bit of fun and touring.

2007 - 2010 700cc Deauville with ABS. Should be a good commuter especially with shaft drive and better weather protection. All day comfy, no fun (FZS for that) but will tour AND will carry a bit more kit in the side panniers and front storage bins.

I know someone on here has a biffer but will take all views on board as I know no one who owns either. Any experiences of any description greatly appreciated. Please remember this is to be a tool for work.

Looking forward to the slagging of my choices  :lol . Examples below

I guess the Deauville will be cheaper to run. My Dad has been very happy with both of his (had a 650 before the current one), both have done over 100k with very little work. With the large pannier lids it can carry a lot.

Cannot for the life of me see the need for either, when you have a FZS600 that does all and more  :eek

Its purely for the ABS. After the shunt up town with the van recently in the wet, a little switch has triggered in my head that for the mileage I do it's now a must have - especially in London.

I have a CBF1000 and had the FZS600 previously (with an ST1100 inbetween).

The CBF is very much like the FZS but with much more torque. Great for riding anywhere but no need to play around the gears unless you want to. I have not commuted on mine but have used it to go to France a few times.

Given the choice of the Dullville or the CBF I would go for the CBF.

Alternators are a weak point on the CBF. Not sure what common issues there are on the Dullville.

If its just for a commute, cheap and reliable wins , i commute on an R1 into london(ish)but when its snowing or icy i take the Cg125 , i only have about a 20 mile round trip and can get away with a ruck sack, i would guess the Deauville would be easier to filter in traffic ?? :)

A lad at my work has a 06 plate Cbf1000 as a 365 bike. It looks like it's rotting away!
My Fazer(s) were coping better with the year round weather with regards to the corrosion.
Might be a one off, but something to bear in mind.
Stop polishing it and ride the bloody thing!!

I've read a bit like you say re the alternators so was planning a rewind which would give me an extra 25% capacity. Cheers BB

Agree with cheap and reliable Mark as I do about 23 - 25k a year so no new bike here - £3500 tops. The Deauville being easier to filter with is actually the one main area i can't work out. Cheers Mark

Interesting Stevie, thanks. Got to agree that my Fazer has faired far better over the last 2 years than my Tiger.

I wouldn't be so sure about the Dullville being easier to filter with. It has panniers built in which make it wider at the back.

The CBF is just like a fazer to ride. I have my sons FZS600 and my CBF1000 to ride back to back. The CBF is only wider in the tank area. Bars and back end are about the same.

Before i got the cg125 for winter work i looked at a new KTM200 Duke £3000 new otr 0% finance  2 years warranty and breakdown (i think ) , the only reason i didn't get it was i only do 20 miles a day max and couldn't justify a new bike that sits in the garage most of the year, when they get to about £1800 second hand im having one  :D

That was my thinking BB re the Deauville, thought someone might put me straight but you've got a Biffer and a Fazer so will go with your thoughts. Biffer it is then.....and I've seen the one I want last night - not putting a link up 'cos I need it  :lol

Nice bikes Mark but just wouldn't suit my needs - need a rack, be able to sit at 90mph all year round and take a 6' 4" rider in comfort. Cheers anyway fella.

Will post pics of my Biffer when i get it.

Frosties....check out the what did you do with whatever else you got thread....got a bit of a scare on my mates cbf today....he reckons from the forums that this is fairly well known but apparently they need new shocks.....bbrown....obviously you know far more about them than i do.....but his particular bike was like nothing ive ever ridden...totally scary....granted im a youth and dont have a great deal of bike experience but id take an FZS600 over it any day in any situation.......appreciate they arent physically that big but i felt like i was on a goldwing :lol ........dunno what i expected...i suppose somewhere between my fzs600 and my fz1.....but how wrong was i........he did have a squared off rear tyre but theres no way that was the cause of the rear end feeling.

A squared off rear makes a huge difference to the handling.

He's booked in for a new one on Friday now as i pointed out to him how square it was....perhaps it makes so much more difference on this bike with the combo of long wheelbase and small 16 tyre i dunno......well hopefully.......i was shitting myself.......will find out what he reckons after Friday.

No doubt in my mind, I'd go for the 1000, it's newer, it's bigger, it's just better in so many ways.
While both will mile crunch, you'll have more smiles on the 1000, especially when your loading it up as I think the smaller bike would struggle with handling etc fully loaded.

Well, that's my two pence worth :)

with the combo of long wheelbase and small 16 tyre

That would explain it. They are meant to have 17" wheels on like the Fazer :pokefun

Handling wise, I find my CBF to be like a heavier FZS600. I do seem to notice if the tyres have dropped in pressure though. Doesn't really affect the handling but you can sense it isn't as it should be.

No, I sat back for too long making my mind up for 2/3 days. The bloke who viewed it at 5pm the other day bought it straight off  :'( . Taught me a lesson, now's the time to buy so if I want it I need to get my arse in gear. :wall

Personally I never got on with the CBF. I looked for one for my all round bike after my 3rd FZS1000 and ended up buying a CB1300 instead. Did not like the handling of the CBF at all.
"Almost" bought a Deauville but the CB1300 had a bit more wow factor and ultimately I did not think there was much point in buying a bike I found uninspiring to ride. Ran the CB for 3 years including through the winters.
One thing I was not impressed with was the overall Honda build quality and whilst the ABS was pretty good I had to strip the brakes every month or they seized up. Ended up going back to the Fazers with a FZ6 for the winter and an FZ1 for the summer.

I'm sure if you have set your mind on the CBF then another will come up in the coming months  ;)

CB1300 is being watched below Flesh  ;) . Main trouble is that I want one of these or an XJR1300 as a weekender so don't want to spoil my future options. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2006-HONDA-CB-1300-SA-5-WHITE-/221884836180?hash=item33a95de954

cheers for this thread as I've been looking to get another bike & there is a CBF1000 come up for sale that I'm going to look at tonight. its 07 plate with 14.5k miles on and looks a beaut!
only thing is i'm fussy bout is the riding position & how easy it is to manoeuvre standing still & very slow speeds!
If I get it I'll put pics up, if I don't I'll put sellers link up lol!
It ain't what you ride, it's who you ride with!!!
