Think about it, that tax people are willing to pay be it - climate levy / fuel tax / green tax /Congestion Charge  doesn't all go into saving the planet it go's into building more roads and weapons and chemicals - all not renown for their green credentials.
I think you will find that the intended purpose of these taxes is to change behaviour :)
London Congestion Charge
Climate Change Levy
Air Passenger Duty
Vehicle Excise Duty variable rates
etc

Never heard of the 'Green Tax'? Something to do with cabbage?  :rolleyes

I know that's the official line but surely you can't honestly believe that's the governments intention?

What do you think they would do if (hypothetically) not a single person drove their car into London today and used public transport instead? You think theyd be happy with the lost the millions in revenue?
Would they release a press statement thanking us for helping the planet.... or do you think the price of public transport would suddenly triple overnight?

It's the same reason alcohol and smoking arent banned.... nothing to do with public interest, just lining the right people pockets

It’s not about helping the planet.  It’s about survival.  The planet will regulate itself – ultimately anything that upsets the balance of the planet will be eliminated, and therefore balance will be restored.

Yes there are those people - and they are nutters. So you are saying that all the climate experts who do not tow the line and conform are also nutters, its that attitude that suppresses some climate scientists from speaking out for fear of not having their research grant renewed.
Anyway remind us Mr environment what fuel does that power station that you work in burn.

Well I know at least one of them to be a fact  :)
Alcohol and tobacco are a bit different. Taxes that have been around since the 18th century.
However.....
High Strength Beer Duty is designed to stop people wrecking themselves on Special Brew and Tennants Extra.
The Scottish Government's minimum pricing policy is to stop the Scots doing the same on White Lightening, and
The Tobacco Excise Duty Escalator is to make people cut down on smoking.
Otherwise don't you think there would be extra tax on vaping?

There will be once the tax income on cigs reaches a certain low level. Just like what has happened with car tax too many people were taking up the option of buying low co2 cars and only paying £30 tax, the tax revenue went down so they had to move the goal posts so that those same co2 cars now pay £145. The same will happen with electric cars which at the moment are £0, according to your logic in the near future we will all be driving around in £0 tax rated electric cars.
The idea that tax is to change behaviour is just a spin to make the implementation of it more aggregable to the population.High strength beer duty will do nothing to stop those intent on wrecking them selves - do you think they care for how much it costs, with that you are just taxing the already vulnerable -now that's not a very socialist attitude to care is it.

Some searches on google estimate that climatologists are somewhere between 97-98% in agreement on the manmade climate change theory.

And there is nothing new about the greenhouse co2 effect. Joseph Fourier in 1824 first argued that the earth’s atmosphere acted as insulation holding heat in and sustaining life.  From here others worked out the various properties of the gases that make up our atmosphere.

By 1896 Svante Arrhenius had precited that man’s use of fossil fuels would lead to an increase in CO2 in the atmosphere in turn leading to a rise in temperature.

Others have pointed out that in older earth history the earth Co2 level has been higher and yet had lower temperatures. There is an argument that points out the reluctance of climate predictions to take any notice of the main source of our heat - the Sun and its 11-12 year cycle or its even longer cycle ontop of that one, evidence has shown that there have been much warmer periods without the help of the industrial revolution. The statement that the climate science is settled is simply not correct. That is the BBC's stated position on the subject (the climate science is settled ) and they are refusing to air anyone with an opposite view, they are supposed to be neutral. Proof of their misinformation can be seen when ever they cover a story about global warming and show a glacier "melting" when infact it is doing exactly what glaciers do - which is flow to the sea just like a river. IMO that can be justifiably classed as fake news.
I remember in the early 80s being taught that we were heading for another ice age and indeed the records show that we are over due for one. At that time there was serious talk by governments to control climate to prevent the onset of an ice age by using aircraft to spray in the atmosphere, could it be that it worked too well and Co2 has been used as a cover story. What about if it has run out of control and they are now using aircraft to spray to try and cut down the sunlight and your Co2 tax is funding it.

Oi, NO POLITICS! ;)
It depends how high you raise the tax. Do you honestly think that raising tobacco taxes extortionately has had no affect on reducing smoking?

The problem is it has literally become extortionate.  Smoking is an addiction, and addiction that is extremely hard to overcome.  The more chaotic your life, or the less money you have, the more likely you are to smoke.

The price is no longer a deterrent but simply extortion, and sadly taking money often from those who can least afford it.

I am not saying tobacco should ever be cheap – but ten quid a pack or more?  It’s madness.

You hit the nail on the head there VNA... its extortion of the poor. The people that make these decisions are on 100s of thousands of pound a year, they don't care what their cigarettes cost but the people only earning £8 a hour who smoke a pack a day have a real dent in their wages for something they struggle to live without.

Sugar tax is another one... gonna charge me an extra 20p on a small bottle of coke because its 'bad' for me... but still sell me a 4 pack of Mars bars for £1??
These taxes are only good for one thing and that's lining the wrong peoples pockets

Well if you take our new PM, or most of his cabinet ministers, what they earn at work is peanuts – their income comes from investment.  I don’t think people realise how rich many of these people are.

Also what luxuries can people afford on the minimum wage, or worse still a zero hours contract?  Maybe 10 or 20 fags a day is in reality, as extortionate as they are, still an affordable luxury.

And of course, the millions on the minimum wage are often working for companies that don’t pay their corporation tax.  On top of that, they claim tax credits etc in order to survive.  So, I effectively get taxed to provide the tax credits in order to subsidise the mega companies that don’t pay tax or even pay their employees a living wage.

But hey I’m just a typical left champagne socialist liberal elite wanker.  Oh and politics is banned on this site.

I don't disagree, but unless you ban something how can you help people stop damaging themselves. Putting pictures of diseased lungs on packets, banning advertising etc doesn't seem to work.
In our society these activities are regarded as acceptable social pleasures - smoking, alcohol, gambling, but all can be an addiction. Five cigarettes a day, you'll probably not do much harm, but 60 every day? Same with the other 'pleasures'. The more you do it the more you pay. How can you get people to reduce, other than making it financially prohibitive?

BTW I've never been a smoker, so perhaps I don't get it  :D

also pricks whose washer/wipers are set too high so they go over the roof of the car and hit you if your coming up behind them slowly in traffic. See, this is where wearing my old mans pisspot and riding an old Harley pays you back in spades...you can pull alongside the fuckers, bang on their drivers door glass and then gob on it, and they just stare straight fixedly ahead as if your not there. its even funnier when they have their missus with them :)
