I have more faith in the majority young people of today, maybe not in some their politics, and views on life, but if needed I'm sure they would stand up and  fight as did the majority of the young generation in 1914 and 1939.

To quote one German soldier;

But now, for the first time, I see you are a man like me. I thought of your hand-grenades, of your bayonet, of your rifle; now I see your wife and your face and our fellowship. Forgive me, comrade. We always see it too late. Why do they never tell us that you are poor devils like us, that your mothers are just as anxious as ours, and that we have the same fear of death, and the same dying and the same agony--Forgive me, comrade; how could you be my enemy?

Erich Maria Remarque (All Quiet On The Western Front)

VNA, what should we have done in the face of Hitler and the nazis?

I don’t want to get too deeply drawn into such matters on the eve of Remembrance Day, as I am aware that my views may offend.

But yes I do remember, and yes my family like many, or maybe most was very much effected by the great war.

I also remember the forgotten International Brigades, of which there were many volunteers for from Scotland.  Perhaps our then governments should have paid the attention that these men, socialists, anarchists and communists, paid to the sick perversion of nationalist fascism that was creeping across Europe at that time.

And yes, I also remember the bravery of the 1914-18 conscientious objectors.  One thing they were not was cowards.

Whilst I think of our crimes recently in Afghanistan and Iraq.  I think too of the arms companies whom will call on their employees to stop for a 2-minute silence before they resume working on Saudi’s next order. The resulting children in Yemen, whom if they have dodged the British made missiles now face starvation.  Starvation, one hellish death.

And if you’ve read All Quiet On the Western Front, can I suggest you seek out another controversial and long buried foreign title – FEAR by Gabriel Chevallier.

It’s a funny question you ask me Hedgetrimmer, as if I am not mistaken many here expressed horror at my suggestions in the past as to how to deal with the BNP and EDF.

So you are saying it was right that we went to war to stop Hitler and the nazis?

Don't you think it's this kind of I'm right your wrong attitude that kicks these things off, some folks just can't agree with others' opinions and won't let it lie, that's when the trouble starts. :'(

Br**it got booted off this thread as it took over the thread and now the subject of war has taken over!

Rememember the people who fought and died in all wars in the way you want ,but please stop posting your political views and opinions, at best it is boring but too many times it is done just to cause division and argument.

And by the way, even though the author drew on his experiences during the war, "All Quiet On The Western Front" is historical fiction, not fact.

Now for focs sake ,the whole lot of you, shut up and go polish your bikes or something.

The only time we have any chance of stopping wars is when the first to fight and die are those that cause the wars the politicians and those who make a fortune from conflict.
Back to Brexit which ever why you or I think is right  it will be the same people making a fortune and come out of it doing very nicely thank you, and the s**t that happens will only hit the ordinary hard working people same as all wars.

Foccing skanking petrol stations that charge you for air! I've been away for 3 weeks so the bike hasn't been ridden for around 1 month. Got her out yesterday, checked the pressures (which were both a little low) so thought I'd nip to a petrol station on the way to work and top them up. Get there and the cheeky bastards not only charge for air.... they want £1!!! One foccing pound for free air!
Out of principle i refused to do it. Couldn't believe the cheek of it

The petrol station down the road from me was recently refurbished and they’ve got a new air machine. It’s gone up from 20p to 50p. I thought that was daylight robbery but a pound!  :eek

Some joker made a fair few pounds out of selling jars of fresh sea air to tourists in the south west a few years ago. There's one born every minute.
