topbox tail light
« on: 06 March 2015, 02:38:12 pm »

so topbox has a red plastic bit on the back similar to the tail light.

bought a 30cm led strip light, wire into the bottom of topbox to the back and wire in the lid round the edge to the back of topbox with a little contact switch so i can open the lid and it goes off so no wiring being pulled.

video all fitted using a custom made rack from  http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=1249

wired up and done.

and on

Looks good, I have the givi one fitted in mine, with the contact switch like you say. Makes a good addition to the bike.

i originally planned to run the wire all the way through but opening the topbox would stretch them so put the contacts in the form of short 8mm bolts on the back ends of the box so they touch when the box is shit, so simple.

im tempted to get a 2nd red or a white and attach to the brake light aswell.

Ah, mine is just a brake light, would be good with both on there though.

theyre pretty easy to make tbh, just few holes in the box and wiring run through the rear middle panel

Lights coming from those shiny ebay surface mount 5050 LED strips taped under the red plastics. Connector is a 4 pin aviation-styled thingy, socket screwed in the bottom of the box, plug routed from the seat and under the rack. Topbox is on 24/7 so I don't need a quick-release connector (also most of those are only 2 pins... I need 4 for these lights)

Currently it is taken apart because I lost one of the red plastics after an accident. Parts arrived, just need time to reassemble the whole thing.

Meanwhile I designed a little controller which will enable all the lights to be "half brightness on" while driving, "full brightness" when braking, side lights flashing with the blinkers. Also includes a brake light flasher function and parking lights. Details later when I get out to the garage.

Sounds a good job mate, I was thinking along same lines but can't do indicators as not enough room in my wee topbox and in the UK I think the police would object to having red lights flashing at the back :-(
I know you can get 3 way waterproof connectors so wiring running and brake lights not a problem as they would share the negative lead then one each for positive on brake and running lights :-) I do take my box off sometimes so I was thinking along those lines :-)

Dam, I just checked my topbox and there is no way I'll be able to do this, it's just a reflector plate, no room at all to put even a thin led strip in behind it and the light wouldn't shine through anyhow :-(
So it's either a separate setup attached to the underside of the topbox bracket or a new box :-)
Ahh the joys of fettling again with a bike :-)

It's off my kawasaki I had,  not sure if I want to butcher it just for a light,  but here it is. Plus after looking at it, it's not a red lens per say, it's got a sliver backing on it and no light would shine through it.

Does look good having a light in the box, but guess as long as I show extra lights, and if I can figure out how to mount the light I've got it'll be on there even if I take off the topbox.

Managed to put on extra brakelight just under the topbox bracket, so will still be on the bike whenever I take topbox off, what do you think?

All marked and above board Paul,  wouldn't be a problem with mot.
All my previous bikes that have had this light on there's been no problems at all, I've also ran HID'S on other bikes and never had any hassle, either from mot's, other drivers or even the police and I've travelled behind many of them and even towards them and never been pulled over for making myself visible basically. So all I need now is my bulbs and I can maybe see in front of me at night and others will see me too :-)

ahh thats great then!

maybe look into the spots i linked rather than expensive bulbs, same cost but proven to work amazingly, if youve got a bit of cash to throw around its not a problem, i sunk so much into mine after restoring then a new engine, got new bulbs that made no real difference but spots have worked.
