Buying a 600 or 1000?

Hi guys. I'm looking at getting a fazer soon.  Is it worth saving up the extra and getting a 1000? Is it worth it? There's lots of cheap 600's to be had out there but few 1000's......

Depends how much you're gonna be on it, and in what you mainly use it for i s'pose.
I nearly bought a 1000 a couple of years ago but as it's mainly a work commuter for me i stayed with the 600.
I'm in traffic a lot, then it sits outside my work all day so to me it seemed pointless.
The 600 is a cheaper all rounder for parts, insurance, fuel, lighter in weight, etc, but still has more than enough poke to have fun with whenever you feel like it.
That's my circumstances though, if i did more mileage, carried passengers more, etc, then i probably would consider the 1000 straight away.

Pretty much everything is summed up there. I would say though, in the flesh the Fazer 1000 is a surprisingly good looking bike and looked a top quality premium product, well the one I saw anyway (Blue in Dawlish if it belongs to anyone on here). Was the first I had ever seen in person. I've never seen an FZS 600 that made me think "Good God that is stunning", but that isn't why you buy them. As Darrsi says, you would have to be honest with yourself about what riding you do and which one you really need / want on your budget.

All depends on what you are used to, the 600 is lighter handles well in standard trim and very agile, the 1000 has great power, but is heavier and in standard trim not as agile as the 600.

Both are cracking bikes and quite capable of embarrassing sportsbikes.

I bought a 600 Fazer a few months ago and I am very happy with it. I bought it for winter commutes, in snow and ice.

But I have a 954 Fireblade, 1500 Valkyrie and 1200 Bandit to take care of my big cube desires. Anyway, I think I would be perfectly happy with just the 600 Fazer, it is a strong and agile bike, you just need to use higher RPM to utilize the power, but the power is there.

The thou offers more upright ride position in my opinion, but even though I keep thinking about it, I've not yet persuaded myself away from the  600

Couple of things to bear mind when reading that Visordown article:
It was based on the old boxeye 600 model. The foxeye has extras (like fully adjustable front suspension) and with a similar fairing looks every bit as good as the 1000 (IMHO)
The enormous price difference at new is now much closer of course. Probably no more than £500 difference for similar age and condition.
As others have said, it really depends on what you want to do with it. I love my foxeye 600, the ultimate 'all rounder'

It was only the '98 or '99 Boxeye's that don't have adjustable front forks, but the adjusters can simply be added if you want them.

I have a foxeye 02 and an 95 thou .  I now only use the thou 2 up, for which it is brill. I have similar vario screens on both , for some reason the 600  has better airodynamics, fuel consumption is similar at similar speeds.

also depends on how long you have been riding. I wouldn't recommend 1000cc for someone new to riding. That said the FZS600 is a quick bike too but less of a handful when things do go wrong.

In terms of real world useable power the 600 is ALL u will ever NEED......if u r a new rider then get one....u won't regret it as many on here will agree....if u havn't much experience a 1000 will catch u out VERY easily.....

If you aren't going through that 'bigger is better phase' then the 600 version is enough 95% of the time.

Having said that, I do miss that bulging torque curve and berserk acceleration now and then...  if only Yamaha had also sold a Fazer FZS 750

I don't know much about them but there's always the FZ8.

Oh no no no - I consider all the replacement model FZ bikes to be inferior to the original FZS machines.

Fuel injected, disappointing tank range, odd power delivery (actually all three of those probably closely related), odd standard exhaust (admittedly easy but expensive to replace), uncomfortable seat and the faired version, tho similar to an old Foxeye is somehow not the best to look at.  Tho I do like the look of the unfaired version...

I'm talking a machine back in the late '90's very similar to the FZS600 but instead with a modified YZF750 or thunderace engine.  I reckon Yam could have shifted quite a few.  Indeed, the 1000 Fazer with it's R1 derived engine may never have come into existence had they went for a larger Fazer in the late 1990's.  But enough conjecture,  I'll maybe just continue searching for the highly elusive Japanese 660cc piston kit that TTS were meant to stock but never seemed to obtain.
