Opinions please on XT 660 R
« on: 30 October 2014, 06:33:25 pm »
Thinking on having a punt on this and am after advice and opinions please Foccers.
Going to try and get over there tomorrow to have a look in person as we all know photos don't really tell the whole story.
Looks like the most serious damage is just to the steering lock lugs....What do you think  ?

MCN paper has a review of a bunch of last years bikes in it & the XT660 tenere is given big praise.

If you want me to look at what they said about particular points then i can take a look or maybe try getting a photo of the page for you.
Easiest way to go fast........don't buy a blue bike

Cheers Noggy, Was more after an opinion on this actual one as a "Is it worth a punt" rather than how good they are in general.

As a winter bike It'd do well if it was cheap enough.

The damage ain't too bad if your not bothered about cosmetics. Lock stops can be repaired easily on a steel frame.

If I had the need for a mini project, I'd probably buy it.
Stop polishing it and ride the bloody thing!!

Pretty much my thoughts Stevie,  am after something a bit ratty and bulletproof to see me through the winter. Got an £800 budget with a bit of room either side and this seems to fit the bill  ATM.

Have you read some of the sellers negative feedback? I was looking a couple of bikes from this seller too. Always fancied an xt660r.

Hands off it's mine :lol.I haven't llooked at the negative comments tbh but I suspect these were by people who bid without viewing first which is always going to be a risk especially on a stolen/ recovered.
In all fairness they don't actually describe the damage so the emphasis has got to be on you going to view beforehand.

Seems like the perfect bike to me for a winter ride. But as it's a well proven reliable bike, got a feeling it will top £800 (I'm going to £950  :lol ). Good luck with it and let us know.

Seems like quiet a gamble if there's no warranty and you haven't seen the bike in person. How are you going to fix it get a new frame?

At least you're going to view it, you're right about the negative feedback being about the not viewing before buying. Hope you get it, these are great bikes once you get the fuel injection sorted out.

Found a pic that always made me want one :-)

Dunceness? I'm not the one buying a bike with a damaged frame. I'll throw in a few bids while I'm standing in the corner :lol

I bought a Fireblade of these guys earlier in the year unseen till it arrived in the back of a van in my back yard . The damage to the bike was well photographed and the bike was just what I'd expected, so I'd dismiss the neg feedback, they were easy to deal with and i thought i got excellent value for money.   A bit of welding to the frame (shock horror) and some cheap  ebay plastic and I've a great track day tool . I'll be buy another bike from them without any worries.

Well, glad I went over and had a look. It really is ratty. needs new ignition, brake pads, c&s, battery, bars, front disc is badly worn, every bit of bodywork is marked and the lock stops are going to need repairing on the headstock. Paints flaking off the engine and there is rust all over in certain places including the forks. The  Lock is focced on the top box  and when you add all this up, it's already gone over my limit.
Someone will put in a blind high bid I'm sure but at the end of the day, it's always going to be a cat c and with the added cost of replacing the consumables it isn't for me.
