XP PC TECHY QUESTION
« on: 17 September 2014, 12:35:59 pm »
I know this is in the wrong section but I can't find the old Geeks corner??

I recently bought a nice cheapy PC game for my laptop to see me through the long winter nights.
Its called " HARD RESET" but when I try to play it after loading I get the following message...............

................"the procedure entry point_except_handler4_common could not be located in the dynamic link library msvcrt.dll"

Now I consider myself reasonable au fait with computers but this has me focced.

Any suggestions, is it fixable????

what operating system do you have on your laptop? What does the minimum spec of the game require?
Have you done all available updates on the laptop?

This link tells you how to fix it.

Yup, second BBrown's link.

Two possibilities:

If your game wasn't developed to work on Windows XP then it won't find the functions it's expecting in the DLL file mentioned. I.E. If it's expecting Vista. Check the system requirements specify that Windows XP is supported.

Or, of it was developed for Widows XP then it's likely that some other application has since replaced Windows XP's default version of the DLL with a newer one. I think Firefox did this at one point. In that case you'll need to restore the original version of the DLL distributed with Window XP as standard as described in BBrown's link.

It's pretty techy stuff and so only attempt this if you are comfortable and understand what's going on. Welcome to DLL hell!

PS) If it came with XP pre-installed then you may have a copy of XP in a folder in the root of C drive called i386 or similar.

BTW the reply I received from the game distributor said

unfortunately you do not meet the minimum system requirements.Your graphic card does not have enough dedicated memory.

Is this correctable?

It is correctable.

You need to go down to your local PCWorld (or other computer retailer) and part with some cash though to buy a newer laptop.

Depends on how old your laptop is - there is a small chance you could change the memory assigned to the graphics processor in the BIOS... but it's a very small chance. If it (the laptop) was designed to run with XP then I imagine that option is unavailable. It's more common on the latest generations of Intel Core processors where the graphics processor is part of the CPU rather than a dedicated chip

Not sure why lack of graphics memory would give a DLL error Del.... Take the easy way out, buy another game or download some more porn :)
