Paint..
« on: 22 July 2014, 11:45:55 pm »
Well, done me course

Amongst all the airbrushing, pinstriping, plastic welding fairings and generally learning lots of good stuff I Filled and painted a beat up tank, practised me z1b paint job, then back masked and put a bit of airbrushing onnit.

Got a wall to build in Bungay then hopefully making a start on my bike..

That really is very good well done. I paint my hugger black and when it finishes up shiny I'm well pleased but it's a bit pathetic compared to your tank. You should be justifiably proud. My eldest started painting his yzf750 about a week ago and he's still on the belly pan even though my wheels seem to be deep in dust from his rubbing down..

wow!
"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - strawberries in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming - WOO HOO! What a Ride!"

Very kind comments, thanks guys :)
In truth,I was utterly useless, it just didn't come naturally to me at all. But micks a great teacher, had a few late nights ( never git done before 7, two nights worked after midnight) he just won't stop until you've got it.
I always wondered why it cost so much to get stuff show painted..now I know.
That old gs850 tank...two days prepping, two hours painting, two days finish lacquering and polishing..the course was £1390, I've since spent £1100 gearing up, big lump of that was a decent s/ hand 'pressor..
I'm having to sell my fz1 to put the funds back, but it was worth it, I've done no end of old bikes up but never been able to do the finish paint, hoping to do it as a hobby and a little business on the side, once I've got my z1b rep done me and one will use it at shows, see if it generates any interest. Anybody here needs owt done I'll look after you, though I'm not doing accident repair or spray repairs to oem paint, I'll stick with seventies and eighties un faired stuff

Once again, thanks for the kind comments blokes, and should anybody need skulls or a wavy flag lol... ;) U

Absolutely totally love that tank fella - awesome!

You thought about doing custom helmet painting........fair bit to be made from doing that and the quality of your work is already bang on.
Those are my principles...if you don't like them I have others.

Cheers guys..the ogri figure was airbrushed in...it's suprisingly simple..I googled images, traced over the drawing I wanted in pencil then laid sticky mask over the drawing so it pickedupthe pencil lines, stuck it on the tank and scalpelled out each section and airbrushed it in...hardest bit was the rosy cheeks, if I'd fucked that up it would have knackered the whole thing, then used a biro pen to do the lines..honestly, far easier than you would think.
Used the airbrush to shadow the z1b paint and put one of ogris wings behind it to give the illusion of it underneath. The other three lads did their paint jobs, we all started with severely beaten tanks ( took four hours of panel beating before we could even look at filler) and they all came good

Here's the original drawing I copied...should have done the bike too but I thought I'd run out of time...in truth it wouldn't have took that much longer. The shine comes from endless lacquering and flatting, once it's polished ( first by machine, then by hand) it's like a mirror. Deffo worth the effort..but with bike stuff you spend far more time carefully wet and drying than anything else in the process

Put it back on the bike and it seems ok...all off again now and heavily lacquered. Tomorrow I shall be mostly flatting carefully in the early hours.afore work...photos show pre lacquer dullness that doesn't bring out the metallics..
