Insurance companies are like bookies, they calculate the risk based on past claims and set the premium to suit.  With something like a Corsa, being popular with youngsters, the chances of a claim from a Corsa driven by a young driver are pretty high.  With something that is considered uncool, so not popular with the high risk drivers, the chances of a claim a much lower.  A mates son (19 year old student) was trying to get insurance on a Fiesta and being quoted stupid money until he got a quote on my mates old Peugeot 405 diesel and the cost plummeted.   The reasoning being that the odds of a 19 year old student in a Fiesta making a claim is around 100%, the odds of a 19 year old student driving a 405 diesel making a claim are considerably lower purely because 19 year old students don't drive 405 diesels so past history shows no claims.

So, think outside the box and go for the most uncool car you can find.

Rustyrider a lot of what you say was true in my case trying to get insured on a car but there was a middle point that took loads of research to find the balance. Too big of an engine etc or a car that is seen as perhaps large or unreliable, maybe expensive in the event of a claim made the insurance more expensive. I also found that diesels were more expensive to insure than petrol. I started trying to insure clio's, fiestas etc and it was stupid. So I went the other way, old volvo diesel estates and stuff like that which would be reliable and could carry my drums to gigs. Expensive. I then found the middle ground were things like very very common 1.4-1.6 litre petrol estates such as the ford focus 1.4 lx (most basic model), peugeot 306 estate and the Vauxhall astra estate. I didnt get a car in the end but would have gone for a focus estate and probably will do in the future although I wanted a big ass blacked out volvo just to pretend I was in the Swedish mafia  . Weirdly, the cheapest car I could insure was actually a land rover defender 110 which would have been awesome but they are often expensive to buy.

Strangely, a 1.4L Rover 45 was twice as expensive insurance-wise than a Corsa 1.2!!! Go figure...

Each car is going to be different.  As well as the likelihood of a claim they then look at things like the cost of repair in event of a claim.  So a Focus Ghia will be more expensive than a base model Focus as the extra bits of trim will add to the cost of a repair when it gets bent.  A Volvo is going to cost more because the cost of the parts to repair it are more expensive (and probably because the older ones where built like a brick shithouse the increased cost of repair to the third party they hit!).  A diesel may cost more because if mechanical parts get damaged in an accident, they cost more to replace and so on.  There's far more factors to take account of than simply the performance

Cost of repair is pretty minor, particularly with a cheapo car. Personal injury (and lawyers) is where the costs come in. Typically someone in a boring diesel saloon is less likely to claim than someone in a hot/warm hatch. You only have to nudge into someone at <10mph to have a couple of £5k whiplash claims + fees.

the new ka. is 75 percent fiat 500, lots of mpg.  a bit dear but think what you will save in fuel tax breakdowns etc, no more worries.
